Florida Girl. JBS is a good company for a new driver, I know, I went thru the training process. Out with a trainer, then out in my own tractor. Succuss depends with the person and thier ability to adapt and have paintence. Every company has its good and bad. I have very little to complain about, sure some weeks lack miles and some weeks you run the tires off. Its trucking from what i have heard. I dont know it all, there are drivers on this message board that are more than willing to answere any questions.
Florida Girl Thanks this. -

While I am not currently, or have I ever been a driver for JBS, I have gone through a couple of orientations with other companies. When one considers that the D.O.T. sets the standards that all trucking companies are expected to meet, one can safely assume that there are similarities in the way the ergonomics test is administered from one trucking company to another. I found that to be the case with the companies I have worked for so far.
Roehl has a four page PDF file (http://goroehl.com/downloads/rdtc/Roehl%20Pre-Work%20Screening.pdf) online that, while I doubt is 'exactly' like what you'll experience at JBS, can probably serve as a good guide to prepare you for what you'll encounter at Greely or Hyrum. Page 1 pertains to a van driver (either dry or refrigerated), pages 3 and 4 are more directed towards flatbed ops. Particularly helpful are the "Ability To:" notes accompanying each pictured exercise; they help define just what practical application the test is looking to qualify in each driver candidate.
Also useful is the info on page 4, this deals with the only things that I have seen drivers get physically DQ'd for. You may be required to wear a heart rate monitor during the test. If your HR goes above a certain level, you may not be hired. All three times that I've done this test there were people, good experienced folks, sent home for having high blood pressure or an excessively high heart rate while under exercise induced stress. Both of those factors can be lowered by cutting back on caffeine for a few days before taking the test, and especially the morning of the test. It may sound 'goofy', but you can actually lower your blood pressure by doing the ZEN thing; close your eyes and focus on a mental picture of a peaceful and tranquil place while breathing deeply through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth. My first two DOT exams I was only able to get a one yr ticket because of BP, but the last time I tried the breathing while the PA was taking the BP reading and got 122/77!! Good enough for a two yr med card. DOT only requirs 140/90 or less for a standard 2 yr ticket.
If you can tie your shoes in the morning and do the activities in Roehl's ergonomics test and understand what they're looking for in those tests, you probably shouldn't spend too much time worrying about any trucking company's ergonomics test. From my experience, blood pressure and excessive heart rate have posed a bigger problem for folks than the actual physical part of the test.
Best wishes to you in your future endeavors.Last edited: Jun 20, 2011
