I am a 65 year old unemployed printer with very little opportunity in my field. It seems that the technology has passed me by and the training is more than I wish to undertake.
I will retire at the end of this year and although there is some money comming in, I think I want to get an A class CDL and endorsments so as to work in your field.
For 35 years I owned a small print shop and now the kids are gone and the grandkids are all teenagers, I'm spending way too much time with Sandy, my wife of 43 years.
I am still healthy and strong with no problems other than a Lymphoma that is in remission since 2005.
What do you think?? I am interested in your opinion and/or advise, however I may not take either.
Steveo

I am WAAAY past mid-life. I backpack in the Grand Canyon about 5 times a year and use that to get solitude. I'ts just that Sandy thinks I should start helping with the vacumning . . oh oh, time to get out of the house

What makes you think you can drive and operate a 80,000 lb truck with 18 wheels for 11 hours a day after being a printer?
I'm not being rude, just want to know what makes everone think that trucking is as easy as piloting a vista cruiser on route 66 to go see the biggest ball of twine in the world?Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
srn1945 , congrats on the lymphoma being in recession.
many are not that lucky.
I say go for it. earn a little extra cash and get a new experience.
I can relate to the printing field, i spent my time behind a 3 color cont. press years ago.
... hmm many years ago... I'm sure things have totally changed since then.
I'm 45 and just starting out myself. Its never to late. There are a lot of great people on here and a lot of information. Don't be afraid to ask questions, most here are more than willing to answer them. or at least respond *lol*.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -

That is not a rude question and I take no offense.
What makes you think "just being a printer" is so much easier than driving a truck
A 40" press runs through 15,000 sheets of 25"x40" paper per hour (# 200lbs per 1000 sheets), that is a lot of weight to load and unload every day.
Multi-tasking including keeping track of up to 6 printing units at a time and controlling (or at least trying to) 8 to 10 different functions on each unit at the same time. Keeping the machine productive for 10 hours per day (we work 3 tens) Oh, and the press is rated at $350 per production hour, so we have to stay productive.
Remember . . what one man can do, another man can do. I believe that driving a tractor with doubles is a difficult and physically demanding job. I also realize that I might not be able to do it. Then again maybe I can.
That being said, I take issue with you're assumption that my past precludes me from accomplishing something new.
No offense intended to you when I say that your comments are myopic.

If you got the GUSTO and ambition, "GO FOR IT" !!

Hello and welcome Steveo,
There are a lot of folk who move to trucking as a second career, and they have come from all sorts of different fields, from nurses, to office staff.
No reason why you can't do the same.
There is info here about training, and also advice about jobs, so jump right in and find out all you can before you make your decision. -
Welcome to the party!
