I live in Southern Jersey (not far from Cherry Hill).

I'm considering getting my CDL, but at this point am only interested in part time (weekend) work.

    Is this realistic?

Truckin is a full time or no time thing... no company will ever hire someone who is only going to drive for them for a weekend. you litterley cannot do it unless your running really short runs which your going to make nothing for doing.. you either have to be in it to the fullest or not at all.

The only part-time driving jobs I know of are through driver leasing companies, temp agencies for truck drivers.

Trucking jobs are very dependent on location. Most newbies are only looking on the internet and reading web sites. That approach leads only to the big national companies that hire and fire drivers all day, every day. Check the phone book, or internet equivalent, and call all trucking companies.

    Perhaps I should clarify.
Obviously OTR is out of the question.
I'd be okay starting out on a straight truck.
It's part-time, so, of course I'm not expecting "Mad Money".

I enjoy being out of the cubicle, but leaving my full time desk jockey world doesn't make any sense financially at this point. Going back to being a medic is another option, but frankly there is no challenge in that to me at this point (been there; done that).

    Thanks for the advice.

    Already been poking around locally.

Being in Jersey there certainly is quite a bit of freight traffic.

I'm thinking I'll go P/T to school (have done some research and found one that I believe will work and has a decent reputation) and then see what options there are. If nothing else the class will be a challenge.

Yeah it's possible. I drive a straight truck right now and the reason I'm going for my class 1 is that I don't get enough hours to live on. I get five days a week, but only 1/2 days. On Saturdays I see a lot of guys I don't see the rest of the week.

Look for suppliers to retail outlets, or the delivery side of the retail locations. Some of them have weekend work. There will likely be a lot of lifting though...not many of these jobs are straight driving jobs, and be prepared for some early mornings...I wake up at 3:00.

you "might" be able to get part time work as say a yardman, or as a shuttle driver for some trucking company in your area. what i would do is check down there for the Volkswagen warehouse, and any other auto manufacturers warehouse and apply there. you might be able to obtain part time work loading up those trailers (for VW say) then move them to the yard, or shuttle them to a nearby trucking company that takes them and delivers them.

you can try just about any LTL company, like New Penn, Yellow, ABF, NEMF, Old Dominion for weekend shuttles. in fact my former employer (one of those companies i listed) DOES HAVE weekend work.

there "may be" some chance for part time work. just depends on what is available.

Understood it might be a long-shot.

And thank you for the balance/perspective.

While I really appreciate everyone's feedback, I'm also not the type to let a couple people discourage me.
