My last job I was responsible for hiring and firing a lot of people. I will say first impressions are very important, Our hiring process was a little informal as I was never in the office i was always in the field. Your application and first interview was typically when you called to inquire about the job. If you sounded like a complete loser I wouldn't even actually take down your information. I did not have time to interview every person that inquired about the job. (Not fair I know but its the way the company worked. I don't agree with a lot of there bissness tactics witch is part of my reasons for leaving.). If you made enough of a impression on my first time talking to you, you got a face to face interview. I would set aside a single day to interview. if someone came in looking grungy slouched and did not appear to be confident and competent you most likely would not get the job. someone that comes into a job interview stands tall wears clean presentable clothes speaks clearly and appears confident would get a much higher mark than someone with a better resume but slouches and is dirty fumbling around ect.

Congratulations to the OP for getting hired!

I'm pretty much with Gravedigr on this one. I would have preferred to see his tattoos covered and his lip-piercing out (when I was hiring for construction we worked in some pretty fancy places and clients were often goofy about such things), but given the choice between somebody who showed dressed for manual work and somebody who showed up dressed for an office job, I'd pick the person dressed for manual work.

In his case I would have told him that for some jobs he'd have to wear long sleeves and take the face jewelry out. Then it would be up to him whether he could accept that or not.

Sure you want to be clean and neat, but you want to be dressed appropriately for the job. That is how you make a good impression.

I've seen it go the other way though, as I mentioned earlier in the thread. Too many piercings or tattoos, showing up in tattered jeans or surfer shorts, etc.

I'm running with Freight, so its a local job. Probably getting pushed back a week as NY screwed up my hazmat transfer, so now I have to wait for a TSA response on the new one. Im so pissed. Going to the DMV tomorrow to see if I can get some kind of extension.

Otherwise its going to be around the 11th before I get running. And thanks guys for the kind words.

I would of thought you would at least have been orientated and working the docks. TL requires hazmatt within 90 days.

Well freight said they need it up front to get me scheduled. I asked to get thrown on the dock until it comes back, waiting for a response on that.

Mark it is a nightmare out here..no lie. And some of these trucks drive like its a racetrack. Taking turns at like 20+ mph just to beat traffic. I'm like wtf. Its nuts but I love being around them so its not that big of a deal
