Happy Fourth of July everyone! My T-bone was GREAT last night. It was the first real grilled steak I had in 5 years.

A couple things bother me though and that's one of them Terry. What are they not teaching in schools now a days? I watched a news program where the reporter asked people walking down a sidewalk what Independence Day meant to them. There was answers from it's the day everyone barbeques and watches fireworks to it was a great movie. Only a couple knew what it meant.

For those that don't know their history. Indepedence Day is the day the Declaration of Independence was signed 7/4/1776, declaring our freedom from England. It's the birthday of America.

Something I guess is my fault, we had plans to go watch some fireworks tonight. Saturday night we heard them going off in the distance. Why do people keep jacking holidays around for their own personal convenience? July 2 is not the 4th of July. Halloween is understandable, but not the 4th, a major holiday. School is out, everyone is off work. Oh, it's on a work night and some don't want to go to work with a hangover. That's not an excuse. It won't be long before Christmas will me moved to the weekends.

ohhh...ohhh (in my best Horshack imitation)...I do, Mr. Kotter! It is the commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Interesting factoid: John Adams (2nd President) and Thomas Jefferson (3rd President) both died on the same day - July 4th, 1826 - the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration.

    Happy July 4th to EVERYONE!

When I read the Declaration and the Constitution it is apparent that the "Supreme Judge of the World" (as described by the Declarations author, Thomas Jefferson) had his hands on the shoulders of our forefathers. I always sat down with my kids and we would read the Declaration together on July 4th. The Declaration is, in real terms, a declaration of war...the signers were signing their death warrant if the revolution was to fail. My God, nerves of steel! How small it makes the current crop of "leaders" appear.

What are they teaching them in school instead of our history and inculcating American values? I taught for 23 years (forestry/natural resources/biostatistics) and students could tell you about global warming, but not what gases comprise the atmosphere. They could tell you about deforestation, but not tell you how photosynthesis works. They could tell you about how America is the problem in the world, but couldn't tell you about our history. I could go on, but you get the point...they could tell you what they had been indoctrinated in, but they couldn't tell you anything based on the scientific method or America, the "Shining City on the Hill". I'll go now...heading to Virginia City to show my '73 Nova in the small town parade.
