I just installed a new Cobra 29 LX in my truck and I need to get it peaked and tuned. I'm running through LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, OH and MI on I10, I59, I65, I71 and I75. Can anyone tell me about a good honest shop along that route? When I started looking into it on the internet, all I really found were a bunch of horror stories. I am naturally careful now. How much should something like that cost?
Recomend a cb shop please

A peak n tune should run you $20-$40 depending on where you go. Some online CB shops offer a free p&t as part of the sales package. Just be careful who you take it to. A CB shop in a truck stop I would avoid. Take it to someone who will take the time to ensure everything is done, not just crank all the potentiometers to the right until the "feel good" meter pegs out, then steal your cash and send you on your way...in under 10 minutes.

TURBO

You meen if the guy has a rusty screwdriver and a WW2 watt meter it might be best to look elsewhere

If you want to route yourself thru the Richmond, VA area on a Saturday or ship your radio out email William at Rolling Radios for more info..

Something like that....
More so if I see the guy going inside with a pair of wire cutters, telling me he needs to snip something to "make her talk with the big dogs"....
Or if he feeds me a line of how he can wring 50 watts of power out of my Cobra 29 by turning a few pots...
scatterling, if you witness either of these, that's your cue to RUN (not walk) to the door. Unless you like a hacked up, sounds like crap, radio.rabbiporkchop and fancypants Thank this. -
I have seen several WACK-PACK jobs
A officer here at the jail stopped by the shop a few years back and could not get his radio to work anymore a quick look showed why the 2SC1969 was cooked .... from a wack-pack job that included cutting traces disabling the limiter EVEN if i was allowed to fix it for him ( a simple repair like a mike is ok ) FIRST thing would have been to return it back to stock ....
There is a reason for the parts in a radio and the guys that build them MOST of the time know what they are doing.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
My thoughts exactly. However a "tune" is probably ok.
I recently acquired a few old CB radios that the RX meter was not reading very well even though the receiving signal was strong. So I took my base station and dead keyed it, then adjusted the rx meter pot in the receiving radio so the RX would sit right at the 30 db on the meter in full transmit of the other radio.
Might not be the right way to do it but it works for me so far. But I made it better than it was stock, without paying anyone to do it, and especially without snipping anything inside.

if you are in the west memphis ar area, stop by ray's electronics beside the petro. ray has been in the business for 30+ years. some of his customers ups stuff to him. give him a call 870-394-4046. he is the only tech that has done any of my work for the last 10+ years and i have had nothing but great reports on all my radios.
fancypants Thanks this. -
Thank you Country29. I do run up that way from time to time. I'll give him a shot.

Ray is excellent! (but I heard he had somebody else working in his shop now who isn't so good......just rumor and I can't confirm it)
Another equally as good is the CB shop on U.S. 65 just south of Harrison, AR. Some of you old timers may know him, he had shops in NM on I-40 and also on I -80 in Montana over the last 35 years or so. Guarantees his work and is the best at what he does that I have seen. PM me for contact info if anybody is interested. (he does a lot of work on radios mailed to him by happy customers!)
