    I'm far from an old timer, but I still love the old two strokes. In the process of putting a small one (4-53T) into a small vehicle (Chevy Suburban) right now.

    Nice. Had a bud that dropped a 6V92 into a 3/4 ton Ford p/u w/ a 10 speed behind it. We named it Fred Flintstone.

    It's still available as a industrial fire pump application. It's a 6-71T/A and it delivers 350 flywheel horsepower. This is achieved by running 95cc injectors and cold water through the after cooler ( along with some other mods ) and has a life expectancy of 1500 hrs.

    I asked why someone would want a short life engine like that and I was told you are required to replace all fire equipment after use ( big fire ) so unless your fire ran over 1500 hours then..... and I don't now bout the military.

    What I thought was wild was the plant that I worked for had two fire pumps, one like this and one Cummins, totally redundant to each other. If we took one off line for service the plant had to call the insurance carrier before we did and call again when we returned it to service.

    I had no idea they were using those engine other than in the military. Even with all the oil leaks, they were still a good engine. They served the trucking industry for many years. I think that I first drove a truck with one in it around 1970 or 1971. Does that make me an old timer?! Or perhaps youth challenged? :biggrin_2554:

    Dunno bud..... I ran the 238 version for years humping cans. Got so bad off I had to wrap a gas rag round the air cleaner everyday to get her to start. Reminded me of the old Cummins with the comp release....sounded bout the same.

    My first job was at a trash co. sweeping up and greasing trucks. ( 1971 ) And they had just bought 2 new Diamond Reo's with the 8V-71.... I remember at the safety mtg. and mgmt telling the drivers " this is a V-8 ! Be very careful you don't tear out the drive shafts." ( Big cam 350 was an O/O motor )

    And we had a couple of Autocars with the steel bat wing hoods.....kept getting my arse chewed for laying the hood over on the other one instead of using the prop.
    That make me old too?
