    Somehow it reminds me of a radial except it has an even number of cylinders.

    should be very efficent, because each of the sets of pistons would be getting assisted by the opposite piston, there would be no time that a piston is just floating in the cylinder. A 8 cylinder would be awesome to see working in real life.

    during the WWII Russian designers tried to build aircraft rodless engines, but war was over before they finished works, and later turbo prop engines appeared, oil was cheap and project was cancelled.

    No not if the pistons fire alternatively, because as one fire and pushes the piston down, it is also pushing the opp piston back up, and vis versa.
