Lantern, sounds like you have your stuff together. Good job . Take some advice from me and reaserch many different companies and leave your options open. If you get 10 prehires respond to them all, does not mean you have committed to them, just call and ask a few questions inquire about open oreientation dates, heck I got out of school last Aug. Werner still mails me a postcard wanting to hire me and CRST texts me once a month with open positions. I never worked for either and only called each once. If you are thinking about Roehl, thats cool, but like I said cover all bases. They are the only company that I did not get a pre-hire from, 1 accident that was inside their time frame. Oh well it all worked out. I like the size of the class, mine only had 7 lots of 1 on 1, plenty of drive time. 7 of us and there was 3 tractors, 4 trailors, 2 53ft and 2 48ft. Your endorsements should not be a problem for you. Tanker and double/triple are a cake walk. If you want haz-mat start all the background soon as it will take some time get the fingerprint stuff going and the o.k. Another quick piece of advice for you to use down the line, when you have made your choice and get with a trainer, try to have some money set aside to pay bills and such. 4-8 weeks with trainer, then out on your own, company is not gonna give you 3000 miles a week you got to prove you can handle that. So try to have some cash set aside for some lean times, it just takes a certain burdon off your shoulders that you will not need. I had mortgage and utilites paid for 3 months , and school. I know that is not possible for everyone. I had to cash in my 401k to do this, but I knew my family did not have to worry about certain things and left me free to focus on a very stressfull time. IMHO this is one of the main reasons alot of people get out after short period of time. No money, to much to worry about. The last thing you need is calling home and hearing the wife or gf complain about no money for this or that, we are gonna get evicted, how well are you gonna be able focus on driving that big truck with that on your mind. Next thing you know you are making mistakes on the road your triner is up your arse now, guess what now you want to quit. Good luck and keep us posted

Thanks for the response.
I agree with having money set aside. However, I really don't have many bills. I moved back in with my parents, and hell the training pay (weekly) at most company's is very close to what I make in two weeks. Money isn't a issue yet in my life. I have a small credit card, bank with savings (kinda, school kinda killed most of it), insurance payment, and parents who would bend over backwards to help me if I needed it (Which so far I haven't needed help from them). Your right though, I still need money put aside just for those situations which can always appear.
GF part is complicated however. Remains at that. haha
As for trainer being up my arse for mistakes, I understand that. I currently work with equipment that needs alot of focus to operate or you will wind up hurting somebody. I've worked in warehouse, and in a store (Target, all logistic aspects to).. We are not infront of customers so it's allows us to talk however we want.. And in training, they show that. Not going quick enough, they ######, moving to fast for them, they ######, you bring up a ongoing issue, they ######, it's never ending. I've been chewed out over small things plenty of times. I've never let it place me at the point of quitting. Now, I've been close to that point and know the feeling, but giving up isn't a option. I smile, let them say what they want, and go back to work knowing they do the same thing's I just got chewed out for. It's really nothing new. However, when I train people, I don't like all the cussing and yelling so I take it easy when training.
Only time I've yelled at trainees is when they don't pay attention to pulling a pallet of metal shelf's, or pallet of water/kitty litter down from the top and it collapses. Those are things that have and will kill people. I know, I know rambling on. Just tough day at work. -
I'm starting the resident training in October with nti. I've already gone through the online portion, they let me pre pay for the online classes. Then all I have to do is finance the resident training. And for the basic CDL training i don't believe it's $6k, I checked today and it should only be $4995. It's 2200 for online classes and then 2795 for resident training. Also, I though if you went with fccj their hands on driving is done through nti anyway? Or did fccj get their own trucks?

FCCJ built the skills pad right outside their building now. That price is definitely different then what the lady said I talked to. I do however really like the NTI training ground. As for the trucks, I know their mech. shop has a couple of old Winn-Dixie trucks that were donated so I believe they have their own. But I could be wrong.
The address for the skills pad is the same as the campus.. So unless that was done awhile back (using NTI?), I really don't know. The only things I know are what was current when I signed up.
Edit: I also talked with the lady in person (NTI) when I was younger ( 18 ) the price was $4995. I spoke with them on the phone alittle before posting this thread and it was $5995, and financial aid added 18% interest. So unless they lowered the cost once more which might of happened, I really don't know. NTI office is right next to the area I live in aswell. So it's not difficult to go back and ask. -
Yeah, she probably gave you the wrong price. The basic training is $4995 for CDL prep, but they also offer an o/o course. That course is $6995. It's expensive, but the main reason I'm going with nti is because their my best bet. I like all the instructors there.

That's cool man, good luck with NTI. I choose FCCJ because of the price and great things I've heard about their program from other local drivers.
NTI training ground is nice though, I did like it alot. I was really thinking hard about that because honestly I haven't found one close to their grounds. But the price was abit out of my range for paying out of pocket. So hopefully all the good things I've heard about FCCJ are true. -
I hear ya man. I wish you the best of luck too. Maybe I'll see you out on the road in the future man.

I started FSCJ, and I'll be making another thread for any of you who would like to follow. I am doing it week by week. I do work after school so there may be a day or two I don't respond and that is because 17-20 hour day is kicking my as-s.

I just would like to add something to Lantern's post. I am starting at JSCJ in 2 weeks. Did a bit of research before hand. I basically just wanted a refresher course (I have been off the road for 5 years) but decided what the heck and registered for the full 8 week course, couldn't hurt.
WorkSource Florida, is paying for the FULL course and don't have to pay it back either. I had word of receiving the full scholarship in under a month's time. http://www.worksourcefl.com/contactus/locations.aspx the very wonderful Summer Edwards was my counselor (904) 819-0231 Ext. 2511 They pretty much pay for everyone who applies, you just have to know they are there!
Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Question, in regards to NTI, do you need a co-signer for the financial aid?
