Is 10 MPG Possible with a Fully Loaded (80K gross) 5 Axle Truck?

    I got back in yesterday around noon with it raining and decided to take Craig up an offer to hang out at MicroBlue Racing all afternoon that turned into 8 pm at night for a very impressive learning experience on just how the process works with the micro-polishing and the coating applied.

    Seen some tractor pull stuff, legend car parts, Harley Davidson flat track racing and even a 6 cylinder boat racing motor ready to be micro-polished and treated. They have several big vats with ceramic media of various sizes that does the micro-polishing with a chemical media process that has the vat vibrating at a high rate to polish the parts that then went to the paint booth where the parts were all coated that dried as soon as hit the metal.

    Got to talk to JW on the phone when he called in with his order for wheel bearings and even another trucker called and ordered some too. All these in between calls from a drag racing engineer, a pro tractor puller, a legend car tuner and even a British engineer from an Indy Car Team.

    Even met at the end of the day a truck driver from nearby Hickory, NC that bought 2 rear ends in to be done that were Arvin-Meritor who had heard MicroBlue discussed on Kevin's show. I hope to have some pictures of his rear end gears MicroBlued posted on here that had around 1.2 million miles on them.

    It was an interesting and very impressive visit that I felt honored to see some high tech racing technology that could highly benefit the Trucking Industry in huge way. It has me really pumped up for my future rear end install with MicroBlue treated parts.

    I would like to thank Craig and Kyle at Microblue for the honor of the personal tour.

    FYI: MicroBlue is starting to stock some of the more popular wheel bearing sizes for big trucks.

    That ring gear had around 1.2 million miles on it before it was MicroBlue polished and coated.

    Do you think it is better to use components with some mileage on them rather then brand new?
    My train of thought is that no matter how precise components are manufactured they are never matched perfectly.
    After some use they sort of wear high spots down to match a bit better.

    I am having two brand new rear ends disassembled to have MicroBlue polished and coated next week to reassemble and have in my truck by August 1st for further testing and if I did not believe it would improve my MPG in a big way I would not be going to this expense.

    I asked the same question about new or used to the reman shop and to MicroBlue's owner with both telling me to go brand new for the best results even though a remanned rears would be $900 cheaper.

    I am after 10 mpg with my dedicated run that I feel is very possible if not more.

    Length restrictions where relaxed in the 1980's Having the option to stand up while changing is nice. (back then) There was still lots of them sold but the longer wheel base and ease of maintenance the way to go.
    Also the speed limit was 55mph or 88 km/h. Now I travel at 65mph/104km/h and is consider slow. There are tons of the "bullet" trucks running 70-75mph/ 112-120km/h getting 7+ mpg.

    The vast magority of trucks on the road are company/fleet trucks. If the pumpkin, hunt, stevens and swift wanted cab overs, for mpg you bet your bottom dollar they would be on the road.

    I would like to have a cab-over similar to this. Minus the stacks and roof wing. I am a local driver most of my runs are under 700 miles. I do get into island/coastal areas that are meant only for a car. http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/andy_bruchey/2006/12-15/alamo-coe.jpg

    I asked the owner of MicroBlue about doing this and he agrees with you about it, but it will end up in the bottom of the oil pan and not on the metal. They spray it on and it dries on contact with a tough bond to the metal.

    My 580 scania does 8.9 mpg at 90,000 lbs going to Italy over very mountainous terrain, the newer 620's do around 10 on the same run, at 80,000lbs the figures would be higher, scania gave a friend of mine a written guarantee that the new 730 will do 11 mpg at 90,000lbs, aerodynamics play a huge role, we have the trailer right up tight to the cab , mines so tight I have to connect the airlines before I hitch because the fridge motor fill the space between the cab and trailer ( and I ain't small) also we use 4*2 as much as possible, less drag, less tyre wear and better on a wet road ( no understeer caused by 2 tyres trying to steer 8) if a 3 axle you need then it's always 6*2, any drag or wind turbulence u can avoid the better for your pocket

    Also a new actros coming soon that will average 12 mpg, there is a serious fuel economy race on here in Europe

    nice to see that somebody thinks like you in US some of your modification are very radical i am glad to see that you gain good result and i wish you a luck in future experiments

    actros e6 with aerodynamic cab have worst results than scania e6 mega( low liner) topline and stronger 30hp
