    Somebody call?

Had a few guys that weren't the brighest. I should say, some that just thought it would be cheaper to do what they wanted. The last few weeks I have only worked a handful of days due to vacation and training. But, found 2 trucks with fake IFTA's, 1 with a fake IRP and 4 driver's with suspended licenses. Sorry haven't found any recaps on the steer. Still finding a few with some serious maintenance issues that have resulted in out of service defects.

Injun, ZVar and 123456 Thank this.

So a steer tire is the highest price tire you can buy and a recap the cheapest. But no where in your post do you say you run recaps on a steer axle all the time, you would do it just to get on down the road, kinda like getting that dinky spare tire out of the trunk of your car and keep it on till you get to a tire store.
If recaps are the greatest thing going and it aint illegal why aint you doing it with your own casings?

    Hijack over.

Just because something can be done legally doesn't mean I have to do it....and just because I don't currently do something doesn't mean I would never do it. Never is a long time, after all...

...and I never said recaps were the greatest thing since sliced bread....just that they aren't the "junk" you and others seem to think they are.

Not junk, especially with newer technology... like what Les Schwab is doing... recapping a tire BEFORE it is completely worn out...

I just don't want to run them on steers.

All I know about recaps is that I've never blown a virgin tire on any axle that wasn't already otherwise damaged. Since I've started this new job in the past two months I've blown 5 recaps off these trailers. 3 of them looked like new before I took off. I wouldn't run them on a tractor at all.

So the old story about dumb truck drivers having to be retrained after 3 days off isn't only par for truckers......but maybe the truck watchers as well?:biggrin_25525:

    Some things are irresistible.....

Besides I'm safe....we only go as far as CO....don't do TX anymore which is possibly still a bit out of reach even for dieselbear!:biggrin_25514: :biggrin_2559:

Just because they "looked like new" doesn't mean they weren't used & abused in a previous life. Broken belts & other internal damage aren't going to be noticed during a visual inspection...and I've had virgin cases rejected by the facility I send my tires to that appeared to be perfectly good, but they saw something they didn't like when they x-rayed or whatever else they did to see the inner workings of the tire.

A "cheap" recap facility won't take the necessary precautions to weed out the bad cases, and caps bought from these facilities aren't going to be as reliable as recaps bought from a quality facility. Garbage in = garbage out...

Yeah, one more risk in an industry that threatens me with prison time just for showing up for work every day. No thanks.
