i have a question. I have a cobra 29 that is pushing about 48 watts. I am wanting to put a linear on it but after ready some of the comments from other threads im not sure i should even post this now.. I am not wating to have the biggest radio on the road I just want to be able to get out with my little radio like the guys who have big radios that are barefoot.. I dont want to ge rid of my 29 because I have put a lot of money in it.. What is everyone opinion on putting a small box 200-300 or so and what kind and where to get them.. Try not to bash me to hard on this one lol.

Most cb shops will have them. Get a 225 or better. Texas star or Galaxy or something decent. Stay away from a Palamar unless you get an unbeatable deal. This is all my oppinion but I used to have a Galaxy 225 linear and a tech from another cb shop took the cover off the Galaxy and Palamar and expained the differences. It was like night and day. I used to talk from one side of the city of Atlanta to the other with the 225. I wish I had a 500 though. I delivered to jobsites and the big radio was useful to find out what was the best time to arrive. All the tower crane operator had a radio with linears.

You can run any box you want
1x2,1x4 will both run good with a 29.
Stay away from the Palomar Elite's,they are cheese

What's wrong with a Palomar Elite?

Shellhart how far out can you talk with your 29 now?

An amp will certainly help but if you're running a mediocre antenna such as one of the 4 foot Fiberglas ones from the truck stop, then you're already hindering your range.

The best place I'd say to find a linear, is....a ham fest....or eBay....or sometimes Craigslist. Be advised they're not legal to use on the 11 meter CB. If/when you look on eBay you'd have to look in the HF amplifier section for one that works on 10 meters.

I don't know that "most" CB shops would have them. I've only ran across a few that had one or two sitting around that they'd discreetly sell if they knew you weren't the FCC.

what does the face mean on the 48 watts? ive been told for a 29 thats very good power barefoot

I do have a fiberglass antena but im not sure of the brand but it isnt a cheap on I got it from the cb show at the petro in Effinham and the guy seemed to know what he was talkinga about, only reason I have it is because it is on a 387. Now saying that it is mounted off the back of the truck with new coax because I know the factory mount and antenas on the 387 are worthless. as far as how far out do I get Im not 100% sure. As far as I can tell I am getting out pretty decent because I often talk to see about scales, bear report whatever and I can just barely hear people come back sometimes like they are fairly far but would assume they can hear me pretty well to answer me..

ok let me ask this.. what is the best fiberglass antena I can get. and where can I pick it up at. website or whatever.. everyone says the antena makes more difference then anything so I guess I should start there. Im not trying to be one of the *** holes that talks over everyone about nothing but I just want a good sounding radio that will get out there and talk.. Remember I need a fiberglass antena because of it being mounted behind the sleeper I cant use something with the coil only about 1-2 inches stick up over the truck

I would look into some good coax also. That can make a night and day difference in a radio.
