Tell you what Injun while I'm glad you had success in your cutting out carb method, the fact is not all carbs are the devil.
People want everything to have simple instructions to follow. They want to be told all of this is good or all of this is bad. Guess what? Just as there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol, there are good carbs and bad carbs. And to really be fair there is actually a good time to eat "bad" carbs.
One of the main keys to focus on when trying to manage weight is insulin levels and the effect high glycemic foods have on your insulin levels.
While this may seem a little too complicated for this type of message board let me explain how this all works: Insulin, as you may know is a hormone the body produces to control the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. When high amounts of sugar are released into the blood, insulin levels spike. And when insulin levels rise sharply your body tends to store fat rather than burn it. The key to controlling weight in addition to the caloric intake/outtake ratio is to try and maintain stable blood sugar levels which in turn keeps insulin from spiking and excess fat from being stored.
Now back to the point about carbohydrates. Carbs are rated on a scale called the glycemic index. The higher the glycemic factor, the quicker they will raise blood sugar. White bread, white potatoes, corn and pasta are among the highest on the glycemic index and have the potential to create a quick rise in blood sugar. (Of course soda, candy and other sugar laden snacks will do this also but I figured you already knew that). Vegetables like broccoli, squash and dark leafy vegetables like kale, spinach and collard greens in addition to being packed with nutrients are very low on the glycemic index.
http://www.glycemicindex.com/
By choosing high fiber, low glycemic foods you can feel satisfied longer and can avoid the energy highs and lows that are associated with sugar rushes and sugar crashes.
Fruits are great if you choose ones high in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. Yes they are higher in sugar than vegetables but it is a naturally occurring sugar rather than processed added sugar so I wouldn't get your panties in a bunch over it.
Fruit juice on the other hand should be avoided like the plague. It is marketed as if it is a healthy choice but in reality the prepackaged bottled juices are loaded with sugar almost to the level of sodas. If you juice your own that's fine but either avoid the prepacked juice alltogether or atleast mix it half and half with water.
And the starchy carbs like potatoes, pasta and bread? You can limit the insulin spikes by pairing them with fats and protein. This will slow the release of sugar into the blood and limit the insulin response. Mac and cheese? BAD. Lasagna with meat sauce? Not as bad because the meat aids in satiety and reduces the glycemic factor of the meal.
Lastly, I said there is a good time for eating bad carbs. This time is shortly after intense exercise. If you lift weights or run or bike a post exercise meal with high glycemic carbs helps recovery and quickly reverses your body from muscle breakdown mode to muscle repair mode. But this is really the only time a bad carb is good.
Bottom line is that cutting out all carbs is a bad idea that while may be effective in the short term in losing weight will be bad in the long term considering overall health. The key is to know every food's effect on blood sugar and be able to make wise food choices not just single out all foods categorized as carbs.
Probably TMI but I guess I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to nutrition info.

Thank You! most people have not yet figuired out that this is a scam. Prime is not doing this for your health but for a split of money with a shady doctor. Being that they do not test everyone it is Discrimanation. You cannot discriminate for race, skin color, or religion but you sure can on the grounds of safety .
-
Prime, like most companies, is also trying to clean up it's image - I mean, I wouldn't want some smelly, morbidly obese doofus representing my business interests waddling around my customers either....
Don't want to be singled out? Lay off the happy meals, fat boy.... -
I have lost weight this last stint out on the road. Its not hard at all to eat healthy, even at truckstops.(I very rarely do)I don't count calories or even have a method. I just watch what food I buy for the week. Water, and tea occasionally, is all I drink. Of course you can always try the coffee and cigarettes diet some of the old timers still do.

Actually you're quite wrong. Sleep apnea is a serious medical disorder. And you're right about one thing... every employer in America has the right to discriminate for factors that directly relate to the performance of a job - for instance, a motor carrier can demand that you take a sleep test if it is warrented because of safety concerns.JoeyJunk Thanks this.

Both of you are correct.
(Please note here I am no longer employed by Prime, and now work entirely inside Canada for a Canadian outfit now)
The principal disagreement I have is like Jerrytdd says, the cost of all of this compared to a University study in the USA or what I do here in Canada is outrageous. As a (now) former Prime employee, I let the company take out what I thought was fair from my unsued vacation pay once I left the USA, and they cannot collect on me in Canada. Tough luck for them. I do agree with ironpony that sleep apnea is a major problem among drivers, leads to many accidents, and is a difficult problem for the industry as a whole. THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES outside the CPAP machine and ways to alter the sleep cycle that will allow you to work regulated hours, drive safely, and rest when you must.
HERE IS THE BOTTOM LINE - MONEY. Yes, good old money. Why do American drivers kill themselves and others by exceeding their natural limits, violate the law without conscience and calling it 'freedom', and have ridiculous arguements like this on the internet? Yup, money. Plain and simple. The outfit I run for now (Kindersley Transport, based in Saskatoon, SK) is a union outfit (CEP - Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers Union, the largest in Canada, and other sister companies of the holding company are Teamsters), and because our union FIGHTS for our rights to NOT get into situations that endanger the driver, the freight, or the general public, we NEVER face ANY retaliation from the company or any customer if we do the SAFE thing and let that freight be late because of a driver safety issue. It's written into our carriage contract, and if the customer doesn't like it, they will find it is the rule all across Canada. That is why American companies do not have very much of a market share up here. They choose not to obey our laws, so their operating authority is shunted to border to destination and that is it. Those that dare (Swift, Schneider, Werner, and our own US division, High Tech) must also obey our laws regarding pay, benefits, and taxes.
The COLD, HARD TRUTH is Americans are getting their shorts ripped off and they don't know it. I make far more money up here, the money itself is worth more here, I have a union AND the government to protect my rights, and I have NO REGRETS AT ALL. I am a very happy expatriate. Drivers, I have switched sides and now see what guys that work for union outfits like YRC have said for years, but didn't understand until I got here. All of you must reconsider what your career is worth, your life and living are worth, your time away from friends, family and community is worth and FIGHT BACK by working TOGETHER to tell the global conglomerates to stick it where the sun don't shine and treat the once great AMERICAN TRUCKER with the RESPECT, SAFETY and PAY they deserve to enable the lifestyle the customers of those global conglomerates live. Period. I hope it is not too late to see that happen down south.Shotsjc Thanks this. -
Yep. And you pay outrageous taxes, do not have freedom of speech written into your country's bylaws and your population has been disarmed. Not to mention, you are still subjects of the Queen.
No, thanks.papa1953 and Rollover the Original Thank this. -
Swift and some of the others are just out for themselves and not the drivers. Why do you think they have such a big turn over. I just went to orientation and did find out that 50 hrs with trainer he is sleeping in the bed. If these companies treated people better then they would stay.

I would like to know if anyone put " no " on all the questions on the long form and was told still have to take the test.

MountainDog (aka Whodat54321) who used to be one of us, seems to have been brainwashed. Sorry dude - I'll stick with the way things are down here.
You can put down "no" to as many answers as you like, but if you have the physical characteristics that trigger a doctors diagnosis (BMI of a whale, throat obstructions and/or a neck measurement larger than your waist) you're probably gonna get a sleep study.
Why? What are you afraid of??? Living longer????AfterShock Thanks this.
