Well when I picked up my truck friday I was rushed because it was almost 5 and everyone was leaving and I wanted to make sure I was released to go home for the weekend. Now That I have the truck home I have done a more thorough examination and have found a couple small items of concern.
First off I noticed my city horn doesn't work. I checked fuses and can't find one for it. So am I going to have to get this fixed and probably spend hours down? Probably. Also how serious are they about the door seals? Both my door seals are a bit tore up where the door latch is. They still seal fine but I don't know how picky they are.
getting dinged for something dumb

City horn? If the air horn works you don't have a problem there...as for the door seals....just depends on how much wind whistling you can take....no regs for door seals!07-379Pete Thanks this.

I had a DOT guy ask about the city horn during an inspection.. and just like on the pre-trip portion of the CDL practical test, it IS an inspectable item.. and does need to work.
I use 1/4" x 3/4" single sided adhesive stick-on weatherstripping (from Walmart, $3 a package) on those doors to ease wind noise.
I think he's worried about the damage factor on the door seals... I doubt it will be looked at, pretty much by anyone.Tazz Thanks this. -
393.81
Subpart G - Miscellaneous parts and accessories Horn
Every bus,
truck, truck-tractor, and every driven motor vehicle in driveawa towaway operations shall be equipped with a horn and actuating elements which shall be in such condition as to give an adequate and reliable warning signal.
But I have had inspectors ask for both. Not sure if they could make a write up stick or not. Door seals could fall under keeping exhaust out of cab maybe but I wouldn't sweat it.mtnMoma Thanks this. -
The catch is that using an airhorn is illegal in most municipalities...so you have to have a city horn in order to comply with the above-mentioned statute. An airhorn is optional.
Tazz Thanks this. -
Yeah I was looking for that or the catch all "If it's on the truck it better work" reg. I can't remeber precise wording or number but that is the intent of it.
Kinda like the catch all following local ordinance.
Either way running with it would leave one open for a couple points. -
Find the horn and make sure a wire isn't disconnected. Don't worry about door seals, other than cold air coming in.

I had a T2000 at a crappy company (WFX)... and the city horn didn't work... so I got to looking, and sure enough, it was disconnected.... I reconnected it, it worked great.... got a shower and a meal, went to bed.... and was awakened at 11 pm.... the horn was blowing constantly - ends up, there was a short, or wires getting pinched in the tilt steering column.... and I had to disconnect the horn again.
That short or bind wasn't fixed when I left the company, and truck 831 probably still doesn't have an operational city horn, since it would cost them money to have it repaired... -
Every inspection I go through the City horn has to work....never had anyone inspect the door flanges but there is always a first time.....

When the steering wheel/horn button plastic gets cold it shrinks and can activate the horn.
