Guys I think what Hawkeye was trying to say is that a13speed box is like a normal 10 speed box with a 2 speed rear end on it, nothing to do with the diff axels.
And I'd like to say its actualy a 9 speed box with the 13speed thingy majig rear end on it. Yes?
Any I'm gona turn in for the nite b4 I don't know weather I'm cummings or goings!

From what I know, yes the 13 is nothing more than a nine that you can split the high side.
Could someone answer my question about the 18? Seriously, I'm interested in knowing just what I have, so I can use it the right way. So far no problem, but I drive it like a 13, and have only split 4th, and no others on the low side.
I won't have any loads until Monday, so I won't be around any mechanics that could explain it to me, plus it may help others. -
The Mack T300 series transmission predates Volvo's involvement....so in a discussion about transmissions, Volvo's acquisition of Mack is irrelevant. If you want to talk engines, though, that's where it really gets interesting. The Mack MP engines have more power and more torque than the Volvo version of the same engine....Volvo designed the blocks and sent 'em to Mack, and Mack's engineers did a better job tuning 'em.

Mack MP10 can be had up to 605 HP & 2060 ft lbs.
Volvo D16 is only going to get you 550 HP & 1850 ft lbs.
Mack MP8 can be spec'd at 505 HP & 1760 ft lbs.
Volvo D13 is only rated up to 500 HP & 1700 ft lbs.
Mack MP7 maxes out at 405 HP & 1560 ft lbs.
Volvo D11 will get you 405 HP, but only 1450 ft lbs. -
I'm talking the overall truck.

Non expert here. The 18 is not a DR trans. Just think of it as a 13 that you can split on both sides of the low and high range gears. A example. start out in 1 gear splitter button back. go to 2 gear button back. Then split the 2nd gear button forward. Then to 3rd and splitter button back down just like a 13 would. Any sense to that. You can later skip around on the low side splits. 1st then second and over to 3rd then 4th and over to 5th. Now your totally confused go out there and grind some gears.
johnday Thanks this. -
Hello Jhonday.
Your 18 has no deep reduction at all.
You can shift yours like an 8 or 9 speed or a 13 speed or an 18 speed.
Its real simple, don't be concerned just go ahead and shiftem gears.johnday Thanks this. -

Thanks guys, that's what I've been doing, the only exception was 4th gear, I go to over on that when offroad, button forward, 4th direct is too low, and 5th direct is too high. I think I've got the terminology right. Using the term, overdrive, on the low side just seems funny to me, but I guess that's what you'd call it?

The 13 and 18 mack trannys are the same with the shift knob being the only differance but the 13 and 18 road ranger are different. The 18 speed has lower low gears. For the freight hauler moving 80k the 13 is all you need but for heavy haul and off road the lower gears of the 18 make life a lot easier. A 13s low is 12.31 to 1. An 18s low is 14.40 to 1.BigJohn54 Thanks this.

9c can only be converted to a 13. Not an 18.

Not realy a split. Its more like having a second range change.okiedokie Thanks this.
