You lost! A13 is nothing like a 10 with a two speed rear. A 13 is a 9 speed that you have a high and low to the top 4 gears. Todays engines like the extra gears just as much a engines of yesterday. Todays engines have a short power band and half gears keep the engine in the middle of this power band.

The 18 do not have a deep reduction like an 8LL with a seperate range box but the over all low low ratio is 99% as low as an 8LL. The 8LLs 'DEEP REDUCTION' is 14.56 to 1. The 18 speeds low gear, low split is 14.40 to 1. From the drivers seat you cant feel the difference. A 13 speed is only 12.31 to 1 in low. Taking off on soft ground or with a very heavy load the difference between the 13 and 18 is noticable. For freight hauling a 80k the low of a 13 is plenty low enough. On pavement the 13s low will get 150k rolling with out a problem but 100k or heavier or if off road ill take a 18 over the 13 any day.

So is the 18 on the low side, high split, the same as a 13 on the low side?
    Also, is my terminology correct?:biggrin_25525:

Its not exactly the same but very very close. From the driver seat low in a 13 is the same as low gear high split in an 18.

Alright! Now it's making sense! I have noticed with my 18, with 120k+, that it pulls in 1st, low split, very nicely. I was thinking it was just the 4.10/4.11 rears. But thinking back, with the same combination of engine and rears, and a 13, it sure pulls better at my loads than the 13 ever did at only 80k. At least that's the seat of the pants feeling.:biggrin_25525:

I guess I was thinking that ratios like you just explained described DR.

Thanks for the correct terminology. So DR trans do not have any splits only range selection. My bad.

I'd still take a Mack truck over anything else on the road...even after Volvo's had their hands on 'em these last few years, they (Mack trucks) are still the best trucks on the road if you're needing to get to places that are off the beaten path...:yes2557:

Johnday you have an 18 so let's just talk 18- if you want to confirm if you shifting correctly- you can split any gear you like including what we call "crawler" and as you know, you don't HAVE to split all of them or any of them its up to your circumstances at the point of shifting (load, gradient etc).
Its great for kicking up those rev's just that little bit more wen running on the jakes.

    johnday Thanks this.
