As would we all....... guess I need to get out more often, I had no idea you could separate employees by skill / premium on the same policy / company.
Accidentally discovered this at my last carrier ( as co. driver ) and was not a happy camper. Having a nose for news and dumbo ears I dug in and sure enough ...all true. ( It's amazing what the gals cluck about round the water cooler )
Seems IF they equalized the office with my premiums, then there would be....no office as there is no way a gal making $12.00 could pay what I paid.....It would be cheaper for her to stay home.
Have to cross this picket line

I have tried to enlighten you but you yourself seem to have an agenda that blocks your comprehension skills. -
mmm, nope, i just am not understanding the point you are trying to make, as i see NO "over the road" division. you do realize that it might be a little bit harder to organize a company that has few regular terminals that the drivers go through, correct? otr used to be union because 4 days out used to be a "long haul". now drivers live in their truck, for months at a time. how are you going to organize a guy who considers his home time in the back of his sleeper? what would his desires be for "home time"?
btw, what special skills do you need to be an otr driver? do you need to know the slope of your load? no. do you need to know the grade that you would be dumping on? no. do you need to know the weight of the coil of steel that they put on your deck so you know how many chains? no. do you deliver the load with a hand truck, piece by piece, up and down a food service ramp? no.
please tell me what your point is, as it is getting old telling you that the teamsters don't care about OTR. they will go after a redi mix company, or a dump truck company, or even a steel hauling company, or freight, but why would they waste their time on drivers who don't even have an approximate location every week, along with no specialized skill other than driving the truck?
It seems to me that you have a chip on your shoulder about something, and that somehow the teamsters are responsible for it. btw, you still haven't responded to who ELSE is a union OTR carrier. Or how you would organize other OTR carriers.Last edited: Jul 24, 2011

are you sure that since you are in a right to work state, that the employer didn't just fire as much of the union support as possible, and get new employee's who were willing to decertify the union as soon as the contract expired? -
You complain that I have not responded to your requests, yet you have ignored points that I made as well.
As for the skill of driving a truck, if you have ever actually drove one you would know what it takes, that is if you were any good at it. -
Oh, by the way, you don't need to have a "terminal" to organize, it is called "locals" and you can find them all over the country. -
btw, don't worry about the skill, i'm pretty proficient. try running foodservice to convenience stores and gas stations with a sleeper cab peterbilt. -
Who are they? I don't have the time to research it, although I did know about Schneider. And by the way, you were wrong, Schneider is not trying to let them die out, they have several accounts that will only ship or recieve freight off of a Unionized truck. Cardinal Freight was otr and they used to be Union, had about 200 trucks.I used to know a few of them but I have not paid a lot of attention to trucking the last 10 years.
Your claim that it would not be possible to Unionize a OTR company is wrong. I can be done. It is not practical to do it though, and the Teamsters know it. Before deregulation it was done.
Your claim that because I am from NC, this is a right to work state and thus companies would fire people for organizing is laughable. Back in the late 60's, through the middle 70's Charlotte was the World Capital of Trucking. Central Freight build the largest cross dock freight terminal in the world at the time in Charlotte, it is still being used by Yellow Freight. I cannot remember all the Teamster companies based in NC, Akers Motor Lines, McClain Truck Lines, Pilot, Carolina Freight, just to name ones I remember. My Grandfather retired a Teamster, and I have worked for Teamster companies, both here in NC and in Az. So please, don't try and tell me things that I know are not right.
Oh, btw, I have been in worse spots than convenience stores in big trucks, without them fancy ramps you guys use. Try unloading 100 lb. boxes of beef, along with 50 lb boxes of frozen shrimp, chicken, pork etc. to the ground then hand trucking them into coolers and shelving them at small mom and pop meat markets and stores. That is after backing blindside into the ally. -
another example would be werner. they have terminals throughout the country. however, any local union would have one hell of a hard time trying to organize any of their terminals, as you can live 500 miles away and still have that terminal be your "home" terminal. how are you going to attend any meetings? how would the union even get a successful vote? all the company would do would be to send all the drivers out away from the terminal. none of these drivers get any regular kind of hometime, so it would be hard to put up any labor board charges either.
you have some great plan for organizing otr drivers? i'm waiting to hear it. -
