I'm new to this site, O.k. so I've read the threads here, but I finally decided to register to join in the conversation. I live in North Central Pennsylvania. Been on unemployment since 2009 and I have 5 weeks left. My kid brother is a driver and makes a decent living, plus he loves it. I took a ride with him for 3 days to see if I would like it. I can't believe people get payed to just drive. It's the perfect job for me that I know I will absolutely love.
So I went down to my local Career Link office and have been there at least 8 times in the last 2 weeks. I completed the Work Keys placement test, the extra study, the practice tests and Wednesday I drive down to Sunbury, PA to take the actual test. Because I finished all of that in less than a week, the woman who does the WIA grants put me in the program even though she said there wasn't any money left. Who knows, she think's I'll get $3000 to pay for the $5100 tuition at Harrisburg Area Community College not ALL like I've seen and heard people get.
So I need to figure out how to get another $2000 before September 12th, that's when the CDL classes at HACC start. Any suggestions from you fine folks would be greatly appreciated. I'll keep everyone updatedon how things are going.

Are you a veteran. If so check to see if the veterans help. When I got my WIA grant there was a veterans agent in the same office as the people with the WIA grants.

Check for other schools. NJ pays $4000 and Smith and Solomon is $3999. The state should have approved schools you can go to.

thanks guys -
Bill122250 : I'm waiting on my DD214 for them, I don't think I'll get it in time for the grant, but I'll ask my caseworker tomorrow.
TruckerGsch : I was given the impression that I have to go to a school in PA - I will ask them that as well tomorrow. -
You do have to go to school in PA. Check for other schools. I live in NJ. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

how does the WIA program work...I have heard you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get approved if at all. Any help appreciated.
-
@BabyMaker - I didn't have many hoops to jump through - have to take the WorkKeys placement test, then take the WorkKeys Test (process took about 10 days) during this time, since I am still on Unemployment, my case worker submitted the paper work for WIA. It's been pretty painless.
BabyMaker Thanks this. -
WIA as I understand it is a federally funded state program. The states administer it and the feds pay the bills. This means that each state has different requirements. I know in New Mexico they had me get 3 letters from companies stating that if I had my CDL they would hire me. Was not as hard as I anticipated and ended up with 4 of them. Then there was the skills tests. I'm still waiting to hear back if I will be getting it or not. I hope so because I really could use it right now.BabyMaker Thanks this.

I worked and paid taxes for 30 straight years and used the WIA to go to CDL school so I can go back to work and pay taxes again because I got laid off.

I'm trying to do the exact same thing here in NJ. I have an appointment with the counselor on Monday. The people at Smith & Solomon said it takes about 6 months to jump through all the hoops here.
