Question: Is it better to get learner's permit from home or to wait to get to academy. If you get permit from home, does it free up or shorten training time at the academy?

Good question, I think you need a learners permit from Texas. Don't quote me on that. Plus it might cost you more. I would ask your recuiter on this one. I live in TX. and had all my written test done before I went to the academy

Alrighty...a little update from me...I think the last time I posted anything on here was like 3 or 4 weeks ago! haha!

I was supposed to get on a bus just this last Saturday, and after some long talks with family and friends, decided to pull the plug...for now anyway. I decided that I need to try a little harder at getting a local job. If I can't get anything locally in approx 3 weeks, then I'll be calling my recruiter back and I'll be jumping on a bus ASAP. I currently have 2 real good prospects, so I guess we'll see!

Thanks to Playmaker, Spat, and Treyzguy for all the info and all the help that you guys provide! A big thanks to Playmaker for even starting this thread, it's good to see how strong it's moving along!!

I will definitely keep you guys updated!!

Thanks again, it is greatly appreciated!!

I was up there a few weeks ago, I know we have some dairy accounts up there so I would assume you would see that area a lot.

sorry for the delay, but this truck has been moving. I'm home for a week, I forgot how comfortable this couch is. Oh...it sure is hard to sleep when its quiet, I almost went out to the truck to sleep.

But in a nutshell, my experience was what was expected. Some things better than others some much worse. Just remember, nobody is gonna hold your hand. You need to be very observant as to the operations of the company and be proactive. Shoot from the hip and be sharp.

If your weak, passive or just a ##### then you will get eaten alive. Be polite and professional just dont take any crap. Once you get out of school, dont be afraid to PM one of us with questions.

So most new drivers go trucking because they have no job and trucking looks like a good idea. They come into the job with no money.

That being said, how are they suppose to eat? You'd think a company charging a driver $177 a day can buy the students something to eat. Every company I been with, even training gives out food vouchers.

If you cant scrape up enough cash to feed yourself for 2 weeks then you have more problems than just needing a job. just sayin'

Another noob question. At the academy you sleep in a dorm, but do they provide a secured storage locker for your gear? Where would you store items like a laptop or briefcase with all your personal info?

I am in school now. The dorms are quite comfy, and most these guys are not going to risk their careers stealing. I am not bunking with anyone, yet, so my stay has been nice. But no, there is no SECURE place to store stuff, including your food as the fridges are common. But, like I said, honor goes a long way.

The wallyworld trip was nice as now we can eat more cheaply then the roach trucks that show up for breakfest and lunch.

The rooms are 3-4 people to a room at the dorms but they do have single rooms also. Honestly I would either leave it home or throw a password on it although it is secure. when u are in class everyone else is in class also. I left my walet with cash in it in my room all the time unless we were on the road.
