I wanted to clear up the PSD objectives as they were given to us. From the objectives we can set proper goals and expectations about our instruction. PSD is a course that gets you your CDL. So the objective is to train you to get your CDL so you can then become a professional driver.

When you get here for week 1 you are introduced to the program, prepped for your permit test, Obtain your permit, (if you don't get it before coming which is very helpful) introduced to driving by way of the simulator, introduction to the company and it's policies, Driving techniques, introduction to pretrip, intro to shifting and backing.

The following 3- 4 weeks have the objective of prepping you for the exam by giving you daily instruction on driving, backing, and pretrip practice and instruction.

I bring this up because every one expects to leave as quickly as possible but that is an expectation that can be left unmet as it is likely you will have a wait until you are paired with an instructor. But if you keep the bigger picture in focus you will realize this is not a bad thing and is likely better as you are not left waiting for an instructor with nothing to do. Instead you transition your focus on the pretrip portion of your training so you can meet that objective. During this time you are at the campus inn and your weekly allowance for subsistence is available.

While waiting for the instructor you are to work on perfecting your pretrip and can actually test out on it before you leave meaning when you get back from the over the road portion of the training you only have to do the backing skills and the driving test portion of your exam. They mentioned to us today that they are considering allowing people to test out on the backing portion early as well.

So if you are not paired up with a trainer you are not left wasting time waiting. You are actually working on a major portion of your exam which is a portion many find difficult. If you pass the pretrip before you leave, your driving time requirement can (repeat can) be reduced by up to 25 hours. so if you are not paired with an instructor right away you are not behind in your training just working in a more focused manner one one portion. think of it this way if you stay and get the pretrip out of the way and leave a week after some in your class did, you are ahead of them as part of your exam is done and you have done more pretrips then they have at that point. This allows you to focus on the driving and backing.

Remember guys the objective of PSD is to get your CDL. I want to get on the road bad but I have to get my CDL first. I also want to be as prepared as possible for the training time so my trainer can help me become a successful driver. Hope this helps and maybe clears a few things up. REMEMBER the objective as that is what will get you what you want... a driving career.

I for one came in hoping to leave asap but now after hearing this today and thinking it through I am hoping to stay and get my pretrip out of the way as it makes sense to me and will not likely put me behind and may actually put me ahead.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for this thread. I'll be in your shoes within the next few weeks and I'll definitely be trying to knock that pretrip out based on your advice.

I'm reposting a little info that I saw in another thread... go to youtube and do a search for pre-trip. There are quite a few videos showing how (different people) to do pre-trip inspections.

I think it makes it a little more meaningful when you can see what they are talking about, until you can actually get to the truck to practice :)

    Have a great week(end) :)

I bet I've already met some of you guys. I'm the bald guy with the firefighter tattoo on my neck and tattoos on both arms and hands! Unfortunately I won't be able to stick around to bs with some of you as I am leaving in the morning.
