nope if you have your own truck and trailer you can just practice with your own tools but remember when going to dmv/ or practicing make sure you have a a driver with class A license in case you get pulled over its a nice fine if you dont
-
Yeah get a CDL permit, teach yourself on private property and/or when on public streets, you'll need a CDL holder with you, then go to DMV with said CDL holder and take your tests. Most Ca. DMV's require appointments for CDL tests and not all DMV do CDL tests.

I did a Google search for "CA DOT website", then I clicked on "How to apply for a commercial driver license (CDL)".
This took me to: www dot dmv dot ca dot gov slash dl slash dl_info dot htm#CDL
This website explains the requirements and steps to complete the process. -
thanks for the help guys also i have a few other questions....the truck i bought has an automatic transmission (never planned on buying the truck just got a good package deal) so im wondering if i will have a restriction on my license if i use it for the test.....also ive been told i coulld just go for a commercial class B but im thinkin might as well go for the A so i dnt have to worry if im over weight restrictions

Most schools in CA have a 1 day course to teach you how to do a pre-trip and schedule an appointment via their school. Of course all this for a small fee. What part of CA are you in?

You might not need a Class A....it will depend on the registered gross weight of the vehicles capacity.....dump/trailer/loader....watch the registration on the trailer as well....# of axles you will need for the weight of the loader.
Class B requires a drive test also....not with the trailer....
Also there is an outfit in Northern CA...Sac area...."Class A In One Day"...might be what you are looking for. http://www.jiffystruckrental.com/ -
Airbrakes are not the determining factor between class A and B.
It's the trailer GVWR. Trailer needs to be rated at 10,000 lbs. or higher. -
Not the "trailer gross"....gross of the combination, truck and trailer, then the maximum loaded weight capacity.
As for the air brakes....correct...we had non-commercial Class B in the fire department....air brakes! -
im in northern cali north of sacramento .........the truck says it has a GVWR of 33,000 with 1 rear axle an the trailer is a tilt trailer with 2 axles im sure it can haul well over 10,000 my heavest piece of equipment is a case 850 E dozer not really sure wat it weighs.
