The conditions in PA were extraordinary, I don't know if the storm caught them unaware or what happened.
IN and OH keep ahead of the weather, especially on the toll roads because of lake effect, if they don't, the roads get shut down with accidents. What happened in PA was an ice storm in places, snow in other places, and a mix in still others. Sellinsgrove and Lewisburg escaped most of the snow, Columbia, which is west of Lancaster on 30 had an ice storm for over a day, vehicles were frozen tight to the ground there, then they got snow on top of that. Of course, PA loves to do things to truck traffic, but if they are going to close roads they need to close the road to everyone, like they do west of the Mississippi.

I ended up run the turnpike to avoid all the mess. In Carlisle it took me an hour to go from the Flying J to the Petro to run the turnpike. They did a good job on getting their revenue I meant highway cleared. Go figure.

And then they let people run it for free until they got the other roads open.

Sometimes I am in awe of these people. The simple solution is to close the doggone entrance ramps when the road becomes impassable.
PennDOT screwed up this time. No need for legislation. Some head-rolling should do just fine. -
My husband and I got tied up in that mess last winter and were crammed into truck stops because the interstate was shut down. On one of the mornings following the closure, the local police began herding us all out onto the roadway to clear the truckstop. One of the cops threatened to haul my husband to jail because at that moment we were unable to magically move our truck from in between a wall, a truck in front of us and another to the left. Eventually we all were able to clear that area to where he wanted us.. which was right in the path of the snowplow that was trying to clear the on-ramp. We finally did get moving, made our delivery and was heading through Harrisburg, when a slab of ice smashed our windshield. Not just cracked, but smashed. Luckily my husband maintained control and came to a stop along the shoulder. A Cop showed up and asked if we got the name of the trucking company who was responsible and that they could take action. We told him it was not a truck, but a minivan... he put away his notepad and told him it was an act of nature.. nothing they could do. Nice, eh?
