I'm heading to Melton next month. I would like to know what the orientation is like? I have been working locally for the past few years hauling lowboys. But my company has laid me off do to lack of work. Do they make you pay for your physical/urine test, hotel room, etc. My old company made me pay for my physical/urine test, etc. I'm really excited to go work for them. But if anyone can give me some of their experience they have had with them I would appreciate it. Thanks

I am also interested to know if Melton drug tests with hair folicles. This question does not mean that anyone is a drug addict or dopehead. It would be a shame if a good man wasted time and money with a company screening and failed when he couldve just known ahead of time and saved everyone the trouble. what is found in a hair folicle test dates back further than a urine test, so a fun night I had with my man quite some time ago in the privacy of our own home on his birthday could cost him a job. Neither of us are dopeheads or irresponsible addicts. We are good people in search of success ready and willing to work hard and make a family. We deserve to explore together and have a nice adult time every blue moon. We do not drink and drive or operate an 18 wheeler under the influence under any circumstance. I hope someone can just answer the question without judgement or insult I dont mean to offend anyone. Thank u!

My understanding on the whole deal is mainly to see if you are clean or just clean long enough to pass a piss test. Few yrs ago when I first started out I had a few wild streaks that end when i got my cdl. a month later i had a hair test scared i asked the nurse doin it and told her the story. She then informed me of the above info. Apparently its fact i passed the test with no question. hope that helps

The Melton threads don't seem to generate too much activity these days. Hopefully some of you that currently drive for the company can shed some light on a few things:
    • Does Melton have per diem? If yes, is it forced or optional? Do they charge the driver a fee to participate?
    • If the driver is required to pay for their own Pre-Passs transponder, how much is it?
    • How many drivers per DM? When necessary, is it possible to actually contact them by phone, voice-mail or qualcom?
    • What is the company chaining policy; does the driver make the final determination or is there coercion from dispatch to 'push-on.'?
    • What is company policy regarding the driver calling the shpr/recvr for last few mile directions and to confirm appointment times.
    • Is the fuel mileage bonus realistic and attainable? Can you supply some details.
Thanks to any that may take the time to share your experience with Melton Truck Lines.

Thank you NOGGIN for being thorough with your answers, that is just what I was hoping for. It sounds like the DM's are much more on top of things than at my last company. My DM there never answered her phone; did not even have voice-mail; rarely, if ever, responded to qualcomm messages and when she did communicate on qualcomm never identified herself in the 'sent from:' box. I can understand and appreciate that the workload and demands placed on dispatchers make it impossible to always respond to the drivers on their board as promptly as most drivers might like, but to insulate themselves to the point of being unreachable seems counter productive to the best interests of both the company and the customer.
It appears that this is not always the case at Melton. Thanks again for taking the time to answer some questions.

Silly policy! What is Melton worried about? Affraid a guy might actually get the RIGHT directions?

Even if the directions that Melton has in their system are known to be correct....what about "construction" that would require a re-route/detour----sure would be nice to know about it before you're right on top of it with no way out.

I don't know. That particular policy just makes me feel like Melton just wants you do drive the truck and do what THEY tell you to every step of the way.

One of my biggest pet-peeves is to get lost in a big truck because someone gave you the wrong directions. I like to get them from an actual person that drives to that facillity every day.....oh; they still may not be right all the time.....but it's a bettwer chance that they are versus someone sitting at the other end of a QualCom that's never been out of their home town.

Yep.....silly policy indeed. The company, the driver, and the customers all need to be able to work together.....and communication is the key. But apparently Melton would prefer to hide that key, and make you pick the lock.
