Those letters(prehire) are not a guarantee for a job. Like you said, it's intent to hire, not will be hired. Most of the large companies don't put you through the hiring process until you show up for orientation since many don't show up.
You're in the same boat with both of them at this point, just one sent you a useless letter.
The stakes just went up!!! Western Express or Covenant Transportation? Need advice

If it absolutely has to be one of the 2 go Western Express but go flatbed. You are at the ground floor looking up either way but having worked for Western on the flatbed side I can say that it was not a bad experience at all and beat everything that I had ever heard about Covenant. Western's flat side and dry side are completely different, at least they were when i was there. There is always room for improvement but I can honestly say I had no real bad complaints or issues during my time with Western. I got drasticly different stories than mine from every Dry Van guy I talked to there.

I would have high tailed it home on the first thing smokin and
UP with yer dispatcher.
You should have been more convincing.
If he wouldn't let you drive than take a plane, train, or etc.
It was a family emergency and you had to be there.
I've been in that situation once r twice and I didn't
listen to their runaround BS.
I got home when I had to and that was that.
One thing that hasn't changed in decades is the rotten
treatment drivers get from dispatch.
I don't care who yer with they don't give a tinkers ####
about your home time, etc.
They will keep you out forever if you let em.
This is why I stopped running OTR many moons ago.
You gotta keep in their place.
Remember, theres always another job to be had
in the truckin biz.
If one doesn't suit you move on down the road. -
Yea I agree with the poster about Western express but flatbed is the way to go and the advantage is that when flatbed slows down you can pull dryvan you know the old "switcharoo"my company has both and my miles are steady i think that is crucial to success.

I 2nd the Western Express suggestion. I've compiled a list, ranking companies from best to worst, according to their annual revenue, and their number of complaints. I've publicly released some of the worst companies. Covenant is THE WORST large trucking company out there. CR England is next worst, but Covenant is rated to be over 3 times worse than even Swift!
Now, Western Express' score is 19 times better than Covenant's. It ranks extremely high, especially considering the lousy pay, for flat-bed work. I hear they hire bottom-barrel drivers too. So, please look in to Western Express because, they have to be doing something right for such a huge trucking company to have so few complaints, and pay so very little, and personally, if I had to choose between 2 low-paying companies, I'd want the one with 19 times less complaints.
Compare: Western Express had an estimated annual income of .6 billion dollars, and had 6 complaints at the time I compiled my list. Covenant had an estimated annual revenue of .5 billion dollars, and 115 complaints. 115/6=19.1. Covenant has 19 times more complaints than Western Express, and Western Express probably has more drivers, especially considering how much money Covenant seems to be stealing from their drivers to drive up their annual revenue, and complaints.
People who say all trucking companies are alike are full of crap. Make your own list. I'm no expert. Best wishes.Last edited: Sep 4, 2011
