Best advice I've read so far from here is to be completely sure this is what you want to do. You also need to realize that OTR trucking isn't a job but a lifestyle that you need to be ready to adapt to. Also if you haven't already go here and here to take practice test's for your permit, just to be sure your ready. Also does Utah require you to have a ohysical done to get a permit? otherwise your just wasting your money as from what I've gathered the one your about to get will be useless to Prime as they do their own medical exam when you get there.

You can apply and get all of the pre-hire stuff squared away with your recruiter. That wouldn't be a bad idea at all. Tell your recruiter that you're interested in starting orientation 4-6 weeks from now (or whatever is going to work for you) and take care of business with your current employer.

As far as being nervous about something going wrong, I think everyone is. I'm going to orientation within the next few weeks and I'm petrified of that. I think it's completely normal. As long as you try your best to give them all of the information they need with accuracy and have nothing to hide, there's no reason why things shouldn't work out.

Hey everyone. Sitting in a TA right now watching a movie then taking our new load to Illinois. Got a big load of Beer! :biggrin_2559:

We got time to relax on this load, so its nice.

Thanks for the kind words man.

When I applied. I was still working and I told the recruiter that I would need at least 2 weeks before I could come to Springfield. They had no problem with that.

They will work with you so that you can come in when you are ready. They will tell you when they can get you in and you can choose from then onto a bit later. I needed my two weeks plus I wanted to be there for my mothers birthday, so I started 3 weeks after my initial phone call. This also gives you a chance to get your priorities in order and say goodbye, as you might not see family for at least a month, probably more.

In your shoes, I'd apply now. They have to do the background check and employment verification before hand anyway, so can take a week for everything to go through.

The only way you will get kicked out is lying on your application, failing the drug test, or constantly being late or disrespectful. The whole time you are there you are being 'interviewed'. So make sure that you are respectful and polite the whole time.

To prepare, the only real thing you can do is try to get mentally prepared. There's very little you can do to actually prepare for being on the road. Just read your cdl book over in your free time.

Good luck, hope it works out for you.

    Hey Seebs,
Finally made it go SpringMo today! Very long bus ride that I wouldnt want to make again... Glad I got permit first so sim training started today from 4:00 to 8:00. That was very cool and hated to get up after my turn. I will update later because 22 hours on bus is catching up with me. Be safe.

Hey guys, long time no post. Currently at a Loves in Marion Indiana.

Been busy lately. We've continued to run pretty hard. I've managed to experience a lot so far from hills and mountains, to pouring rain, to city traffic, and to night time driving.

It's taking a bit of time to get used to the awkwardness of my hours but for the most part I've been enjoying it.

The 'fear' of driving is starting to go away and I'm starting to look forward to it more and more now. While at first I was nervous every time before I drove, now I look forward to doing it.

Planning on going back to test out round the 15th. Then I'm going to stay with my instructor and he is going to train me also. I'm happy about this as we get along really well.

Some exciting things that's happened so far.

Got to air horn for a little kid.
Pulled my first high value load
    Delivered my first walmart run
    Pulled my first night trip
    Met a lot lizard

Some other things have happened too but overall been an enjoyable experience. I'm excited to get back and test out. I still haven't got a lot of backing experience but he did tell me we'd work on backing at the pad at least 3 days before I test.

    Hope everyones well, stay safe.

Haha. I remember that ride. That was part of my encouragement to stay with it. Go home on a truck, not a bus. :biggrin_25519:

Kick some ### buddy and stay in touch. Let me know how you do.

    CadetTrucker Thanks this.

Do you have to get checked out by a doctor before you can take your permit? I didnt think you had too.

I filled out my Prime application but I havnt called them yet to get intouch with a recruiter.

so I was going to go take the written test this week to get my permit

    Greetings Shadowing...

I just looked int he MO CDL book and it says:

    "CDL Permit
You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a temporary
commercial driver license (CDL) permit. You
must also have passed the written, road sign, and vision
    tests."

It doesn't mention the medical exam. You might call one of the phone #s on page 14-6 of the book and ask.

I took mine in Kansas just a few weeks ago and didn't have to have the physical.

    Good luck :)
