Have gone thru 2 compressors in the past couple of months..now on the third. All components in the system with the exception of the evaporator in the front and bunk relatively new. On third compressor now, cooled then gradually lost cooling same as before. Took it to Frtl. dealer, removed air2air and evaporator cleaned all. Radiator was quite dirty. Cools quite well now however once it heats up outside the fan clutch stays engaged for 8 to 10 mins. at a time before cycling off, then back on almost immediately. Anyone have any thoughts on this. I'm thinking that the radiator may need to be removed and vat cleaned as the mech at the dealer used air and then water and some alkaline cleaner at some point. Radiator is not low. works normally in the "cool" hours of the night and early morning...Thanks for your thoughts on this
AC question....

Sometimes after a while the fins on the condenser start to detach from the tubes so the refrigerant doesn't change to a liquid as well. Run the truck until the a/c quits, or starts to get warm and just spray water on the condenser. If the a/c gets cold again, you need a condenser.

Thanks for your response....the condenser is steel and is just about new. The return air temp through the hottest part (105+ yesterday) never rose above 58F....I'm thinking about opening up the evap. housings and cleaning the cores completely. I removed the blower fans and sprayed coil cleaner and rinsed...but I don't know if that was good enough. that air flow is ok through the returns but I don't think it is as good as it should be.....Last edited: Aug 8, 2011

I have changed compressors out on the road and just refilled with freon and worked great, but that doesn't happen often. You didn't mention what all you changed besides the compressor, but you should always change the drier and expansion valves (or orfice tube if equipped) and pull a good vacuume. While you have all the lines loose blow them out with shop air, when a compressor goes alot of times little pieces of metal can remain in the system and ruin the new compressor, hence the above steps. One other thing is to be sure to pre-oil compressor and add pag oil when adding freon. Good luck.
tesla4all Thanks this. -
So a bit of an update...apparently the Frtl. Mech didn't blow out the radiator too well cause I took it to a local Mech. we use and you wouldn't believe the dirt and dust that came out of that thing. Fan still staying on. I was told that the guy that regularly services this ac runs a little less refrigerant in the system than normal to prevent this very thing....

i can understand the reason for putting a low charge of freon in the system but it still doesnt fix your problem. why were the first two compressors replaced??
