Last year I had a Volvo I-shift and ran the rock pile all the time. No problem with the I-shift. The truck I have now is a smartshift and sucks on the hills, but I run the midwest now.

I'm hoping to do longer runs, rather than just in town stuff, so I'd prefer 18 speed over auto. Seeing as I'm brand new though, i'll have to run with whatever I'm given... What about trucking up in the oil sands? Does anyone know much about it?

Auto's are interesting, 1st and second gen are garbage, 3rd gen is wierd but good i guess? id never drive one but they finally ironed out all the major problems but they do have their own little quirks to get used to. From what little ive heard (newbie myself) auto's are for super money saving OOs or large fleets deciding to make the switch to slightly more fuel efficient rigs, Some old timers were all but dragged into them with a team of horses and now you couldnt get them out with a bomb in the truck... Everyones different on them unfortunatly they are the future of the industry :S As to the poster, get into a standard while you can.

I might be doing some day trips to salmon arm and Princeton in the next few weeks if you want to come with

hey i ended up getting a job doing long haul, so i've been on the road for the last three weeks (and heading out again tomorrow).... thanks so much for the offer though! I can't believe that i'm actually doing this, it's still so surreal
vman73 Thanks this. -
Who did you get a job with? How do you like it so far? What school did you go to for your CDL? I'm thinking of MTI in Castlegar.....

I got a job with Whiskey River Warehousing and I love it! I'm not home a whole lot, but I knew that's how it goes with long haul. I took Valley Driving School out in Chilliwack. They were great, but if you have the $$ to invest, do the 180 hour course or MTI. I would have liked more training before I was "thrown to the wolves". Good luck!

"thrown to the wolves", gotta love that line. I too can relate. the first OTR outfit I ran for just tossed me a set of keys and a note with the load info. Said "call when your loaded". Hope you enjoying the open road "Little one".

Yup that was pretty much identical to me, but it was a great way to learn what and what not to do real quick... Thanks, I'm loving it so much
