Besides starting and stopping, what use is the clutch?
Just kidding, I think I went 3 city blocks double clutching, then we started floating and I haven't double clutched since.
I take that back, Friday he was encouraging us to double clutch while down shifting, as we were told some companies want you to double clutch while down shifting. Don't make much sense to me though, you still have to let off the fuel and then bring the rpm's up (clutch or no clutch, it sounds like floating to me). They must have bought some stock in clutch companies.....

Can you two step? Ya know the dance? It is a timing thing, you do not clutch twice. It more a dance with the gears, when you get it, you will smile

When are those instructors going to understand this is not the military?
My first suggestion when teaching a newbie to shift would be to adjust the driver seat so that you have to stretch to floor the clutch pedal. That reduces the engaging of the clutch brake.

I, for the life of me, could not understand the pause. I thought that I was doing it correctly but I still ground gears unmercifully. If you start your shift at 1300 rpm you want to go into gear at about 1000 to 1050 rpm.

Try this explanation for upshifting instead.
.At 1300 rpm, half clutch, shift to neutral and let the clutch out. Now say the word "Delaware". Half clutch, shift to gear and clutch out.
IF it went into gear without grinding, great! You got it!

If you ground the gear, were you below 1000 rpm? Yes, then use a shorter word like Utah or Texas. Change the length of your pause not the speed that you are shifting.
.If you ground the gear and you were above 1000 rpm then use a longer word like Pennsylvania or Oklahoma. Again, change the length of your pause not the speed that you are shifting. -

double clutching removes the "shock" from the transmission, I leaned to drive in a 2-ton gas burner rice truck with a 5 speed and 2 speed dog on the rears, You had to double clutch ever shift ,are pull over and start again at a stop, and she was a 64 model f-600,
as for your instructor not being PC, good for him i believe he was being colorful to help you under stand you were shifting wrong, T-boy! -

I would tell my instructor that he is wrong, a woman only needs 1 finger on her shifter!
OBTW You only need 2 fingers on the shifter and the right timing.
"Feel" the grind (don't jam it), the slower the grind the closer you are matching engine speed.
Pretty soon you will do it without even thinking, while eating a sandwich juggling a hot coffee and talking on your cell phone (and hollering at the A-hole that just cut you off)!dirtyrabbit Thanks this.
