Ok there is a disc cap at position C76 that links that section of the board to chassis ground. Possible that Cap is bad????

Well I guess I have a bunch of bad Mics here. two bad 636 mics (one here in my garage and one in the truck) One bad stock cobra Mic. I plugged my factory connex mic into it and all works well, went out to my pickup and grabbed mu Uniden mic and that works well also.

Is there away I can bypass the grounding in the mics so that I don't have to replace them or tear them all apart? Can I just ground the pin on the back of the mic jack and not worry about it anymore?

No fix the mikes. Should take a few minutes each. Take apart the plug, usually a wire is broken there. If you ground the mike pin for RX you will have wide open TB in TX, meaning out of control squeal. You would have to turn the mike gain so low just to talk that no one would hear you.

Ok after further looking. I took the 636 mic I have here in the garage apart. Took the switch apart in it and cleaned up the contacts. Put it back together and walla I have sound coming out of my radio again. Seems my problem lies within warn or dirty contacts within the switch of the mic. It is not completely unkeying and telling the radio that it can make sound again. Correct?

Yes after further looking into it, I figured that out.

May have to fire up the Harley and run over to the yard and grab that mic out of the truck. Nice day for a ride anyway.

I can't thank you enough for your help. I wish I could shake your hand in person. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

It is so nice to come and ask a question without someone basically telling you that you are a dumb a55 and you can't do anything right.

You are welcome. A long time ago in a galaxy far far away switch contacts were plated with hard non oxidizing metals such as Rhodium, Platinum, and others. Since the parts have started coming from China they are essentially pot metal. New Cobras sitting in their boxes on the ship over here will arrive with the CA-73 mike contacts actually black from oxidation and corrosion in the moist salty air. Ditto for the new noise canceling mikes assembled with parts made in China. Even new you should clean the switch before use with a lubricating cleaner. While you can get this at Rat Shack paying eleven dollars for a 4 oz can sucks. Not to mention their formula contains too much oil and too little cleaner. Never use WD40 for this there is an acidic component to their formula. A better choice is a 13 oz can of Puretronics 5000 for $6.95 from All Electronics.

Even with the $7 charge to mail it to you it is still a better deal than burning gas to drive to Rat Shack and the formula is superior. Helps to search the site for a few more items you can use to make the shipping a better deal, so long as you keep to the $7 minimum. Some of your mikes may be similar switch problems and some could be the broken wire.

Do not use this stuff for cleaning controls, a non lubricating hexane is better.

Many Wallmarts carry the same thing for $4 in the CRC line. For any switches however you need to use the lubricating cleaner.

Well the second Mic repair, on the astatic 636 that was in the truck, was not quite as easy. I cleaned the switch etc but still did not work. Found my itty bitty phillips screw driver and took the plug apart. The black wire in position 4 was broken off the terminal. It was so short that I could not get it too reach and ended up pulling the yellow off of terminal 2. Them things are like little hairs in there. Well got the wires stripped, tinned and reinstalled and did a quick check. Bingo! we have connection and sound again.

Thank you again for your help. Saved me some cash as I would have probly ended up buying another cobra 29 and would have still had problems and ended up buying another mic.

Glad you found your problem. FYI, that cap is used as a DC Blocker. It helps keep Circuit Ground separate from Chassis Ground. You'll find a bunch of them if you look.
