    Hello to everyone,
    I'm new here and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about driving from real people, not recruiters and not company classifieds. Every add I've read about a company looking for drivers say they are the top in pay and especially driver appreciation. Fat chance they all can all make that claim realistically.
    Presently I'm checking out different driving schools, companies for possible employment, type of trailer to pull; van, flatbed, tanker, etc. and determine where the money and/or bennefits are best. Any and all opinions appreciated. BTW I am 57 in a month and wonder if that will hurt my chances of being hired.

    Welcome, Johnny!

    You're starting out right- there are a lot of traps in this biz to watch for and you're no kid- so far, age hasn't been a problem but that's subject to change by the minute.

    I'm going to assume that you'll make solid decisions when it's time to dive into trucking, the more info you get the better prepared you'll be.

    You're smart to look for lies, trucking is built like a movie stage. It looks good from the front side a quarter of a mile away, but from behind, it's only a two dimensional plywood and paint fake facade.

    Your first choice might be deciding if you will pay for a school or work for a company that will train you. I chose to pay for a driving school myself, but having a company own you for a year is not a problem for some folks.

    The oilfield is growing really fast, the national companies are jumping into it. And don't forget to check into Federal, State, County or Municipal driving jobs too.

    If you're really confident and have the background, if you like risk, there are opportunities for leased O/O's and drivers who have their own authority. (Don't get into a rush to try this, it's good to watch and learn for at least a year or two).

    Thanks Dave for the information. I have a clean background and don't see any problems in getting my CDL or getting hired if age isn't a disqualifier. The oil fields are something I'll have to ckeck out.
    I'm looking at doing maybe regional driving or long distance and not become an O/O. I can't for the life of me figure out how they make any money when they have to foot the bill for almost everything associated with trucking.
    Quite honestly I don't see trucking as offering much in the way of income and benefits. I'm talking vacation, holidays, sick time and so forth even though I understand driving is a whole different breed of cat. Working 7 days a week 10 hour days for even a grand is not a lot for the hours. You'll have to excuse me but I am used to the time and a half and double time world for most of my adult life. Also I almost forgot, I am going to pay for the schooling myself, 98% sure of that.
