Don't worry the classroom stuff is short, you will be out driving in a couple of days.

Slotsjc, I am from NY as well, UPSTATE...and will be heading to RDTC as well. Look forward to reading your experiences.
Shotsjc Thanks this. -
Where ya from in ny nogah?
Well day two was awsome! After going over our chapters in the book we had to read, we heading to the class on the "Roehl Way". Made me think. I like that. I chose to apply to Roehl for that very reason and it was nice to hear it isn't ########. lol I respect that.
After class we headed out to the trucks. After a few demonstration laps on the range we got behind the wheel. I was nervous. I had one other guy in my truck and he went first. He was shaky but started to get it. Then came my turn. Gulp. lol. I did really well so the trainer Joe said. I seemed to get the double clutching. I was a bit shaky on the downshifts but was happy with my performance overall. Woohoo. I did it! lol. Broke the ice so to say. Was exhilerating!
Well I got to hit it. Time for class! Have a great day all! -
Near Syracuse, good luck on the next days, but sounds like they really get you moving fast.

Yes it is a fast paced program for sure! Today after an hour in the classroom it was back to the range for more driving. We did a few laps going to the left and then doing right turns. My shifting is definitely improving. I must have done six laps or so my last turn driving and my trainer never said one word, and I pretty much hit every shift! Woohoo!
After lunch we did straight backing. Both myself and the other guy in my truck did really well with it. We kind of lucked out as there is five guys in our class. They have three in the other truck so with two we are getting a lot of behind the wheel time.
We got to see a demo of 45 degree backing and uncoupling which is cool. Tomorrow is our turn and probably hitting the roads of Marshfield. Lookout! lol. Oh well, I better hit the books. Onward and upward! -
The people in Marshfield know what trucks to look out for... LOL!!! There are lots of good places to teach in the industrial areas in and around Marshfield. The good thing is, it is really flat, so you don't have to worry much about power downshifting, or starting out on a hill. Just enjoy the two man truck, that is great you are getting so much seat time.

Sounds awesome. I know one of the things that I was looking for was student to instructor ratio. Especially when it comes to the shifting and backing. More practice time the better. One thing, on the weekends, did they say if you would be able to practice skills on the course at all?
-
They usually do at least a half day on Saturday, out on the range. If you think you need more practice with backing or whatever, just ask your trainer for help. That is what we get paid for, to train you... If your trainer blows you off or thinks you don't need it, call your FM and take it up with them. They will make sure you get the help that you need one way or another. I always enjoyed getting out on the range, and just stand back and watch what the student would do. Then it was easy to tell them what they were doing right, and then correct what they were doing wrong. It is alot easier to practice on the range, rather than a busy truck stop, or busy dock.

Well day four is in the books. We terrorized the streets of Marshfield today! LOL You can definitely tell the Roehl drivers know to give the students a wide berth out there. lol. We did a couple of laps around Marshfield and then out to the country for some shifting practice. I did really good so my trainer said. I felt good about it.
We got to do one 45 degree back a piece at the end of the day. It really is all in the setup. More practice tomorrow. This Saturday we can practice our pre-trip inspections. Next Saturday we can practice our backing. The days are flying by. I am tired as hell when the day is done but not a complaint. Its a good tired!
On a personal note, my daughter took some more of her first steps. I am a bit sad not to be there but I am doing this for them. My other daughter killed me last night when I was talking to her on Skype. She started crying and said I wasnt coming back. Ouch! Tough being away from them but it will be worth it in te end. I am very glad to have chosen Roehl. Great teachers and definitely the company I want to work for.
Oh well, time to hit the books again. See ya all tomorrow!
