I started with flatdecks and did that for a long time. Then I wanted to get out of the weather and started to pull reefers and vans. Well my pay went into the toilet and I had to work all kinds of nutty hours.
Now I'm back on the decks and making good money again. My hours are also back to normal. Most of the loads I haul are OD so I get paid more. I will never pull a van or reefer again.
As far as mega carriers go, I gave that a try also. I did not end well. The company I'm with now has about 30 trucks. My load assignment goes like this. P/U load and take it to here, never a time, just a date.
Last weekend I showed up at John Deere on Saturday morning and was told my Combine won't be ready till Monday. I sent the message, and the boss put me in a room for 2 nights. I never had to ask he just did it. Two days ago my load didn't clear the border. The Boss said drop it and go home for your days off. Now that's respect. You don't get that at the mega carriers or most other places.
Don't give up on what can be a great career just because of Swift and USA. Sometimes you have to job hop in order to find out what works for you. As for me I should never left the decks. But I did find out what it's like for the rest of you. Learn how to pull a deck or RGN and you will get treated better. -

All it takes is for a BFI like USA to keep you out, that's when you find a place like a wrecker yard where your truck can be parked with a deposit of cash from your pocket safely, securely and the only person who can get it out is you after paying the deposit. Go on line and purchase a flight home, park the truck call a cab and go home!
Do NOT answer any calls from the company until you are finished with home time and are heading back to the truck when you close the taxis door!
If you want you can cover the dome so no pings to the QC or whoever they use get through. When you get back to a truck stop uncover the thing and your reply is "I don't know what happened to it?" That's right it quit working but I didn't notice it because I also was very sick and have been asleep since whenever!
Why didn't I call? I did call but you people don't seem to hear what I tell you so that's your problem as I sit in a truck not in an office where my job is to screw with drivers with your lousy operating procedures.
OR you can tell moron dispatcher that here's the deal. I am looking for a secure place that will hold the truck and trailer and not allow anyone to get it except me. I am then going to the airport and I'll be on flight # and give the idiot the information on when you'll be taking off and returning to be ready for a dispatch.

You can get my arse home as I requested 10 to the 20th time squared that I have asked your sorry arse to get me home. Which do you want to do? I will NOT take any load that does not go by my house. Did you hear that? Do I go home on my own or can you do your job as a dispatcher and get me home? If you can't then you really are not fit fpr the job of dispatcher. Maybe the carry out window of BK or for the clown but you make a sorry dispatcher!
While talking to moron be nice but firm. Any human on the planet can actually talk to people in a very sarcastic way without dropping any F bombs or one single cuss word! That really pisses them off when they realize that you have no respect for them as a human and you are not falling for their crapola anymore!
NOW: This is a good reason not to have a bunch of crap in the truck! You could be fired on the spot and having a bunch of Bull Crap as if you actually need all that junk is going to cause a problem with you as to sell on the CB, trash or pay stupid money to ship it home! Or they can bring you back to the yard and fire you!
Me? I would have NO problem with USA firing me be cause for a company like them to tell me I can't go home they can all kiss my royal red arse! If they can go home every night but think the ones who pay their paychecks can't then from the CEO on down they can all pound sand where the sun don't shine! Yes without the drivers not a single cent comes into the company. To treat the backbone of the company like trash is how the "trash" should treat the company!
Stop knuckling under to morons! Yes I am calling ALL dispatchers, and all the other alphabet people in any company like this morons.
Take your life back from these people. Tell them you will be home on such and such a date and tell them how and if you really care if they say you can't do that.
Hey where is the idiot at that is going to stop you? HMMM? Sitting in a office 500 miles away? Yeah he'll be able to stop you with a sentence on a Qualcomm screen! If they are going to keep you from home like this then there is a better company out there.

It is amazing how opinions vary for all these companies.I honestly believe its a crap shoot wherever you go,which is very scary trying to start out in this business.
You try and do all your homework on picking the right company..Ultimately you have to take a leap of faith,and do a good job,and pray you don"t get a nut job dispatcher. -

No! I left them and trying to go into the Coal Mines.
Sorry! I am not giving 18 straight days of my life away... for 400 dollars and sometimes less per week!

I was fired after returning to work "cured!"
The reason was: I was in upstate NY in white out conditions and was pushing the HOS limits and actually freaking fell asleep at the wheel. I nodded off and hit and climbed onto the guard rail but not over it. Not DOT reportable and I paid the $500 deductible out of my escrow. I should have waited longer to get the effects of radiation and chemo out of my system but I needed to get back to work due to a few bills needing to be paid. Even though I was released by all my doctors They really didn't want me to get to over worked and white out lake effect conditions did whay they didn't want me to go through.
Yes I was fired for an accident BUT many drivers for the company that had accidents didn't get fired unless it was from gross disregard of the rules. I did not fall into that category.
The company I was driving for was implementing a change over to a full L/P program and was looking for anyway they could to either get the company drivers that were not stupid enough to do a L/P contract or to fire them. This was their way to fire me. In March '09, 3 months after my accident they DID fire the last 32 drivers who refused that great better than Primes L/P deal!
Now for a little update...The company in question looks like a used truck lot. They are now advertising on CL and with the state for COMPANY drivers! He's cutting the L/P side out and not hiring any more O/Os or L/Ps. The owner is also selling off trucks and trailers down to 100 total tractors and 150 trailers in preparation of selling his company. Even office personnel are getting cut even some who had been there since it was only a small office with 4 docks for cross loading trailers.
