Wannabe hits roadblock

    Hello all, I will give you a little background. 48 year old carpenter laid off twice in the last 8 months, once for 6 weeks, and currently for 10 weeks. I have workedfor this company for the past 6 years. Things are not looking strong in the construction industry lately. My stepfather was a driver and then a dispatcher for Ohio Eastern Express for over 40 years before his passing. 1 company man. My mother was the safety director for over 15 at the same company. Which gives me some insight to the rigors a commercial driver faces. I have been married for over 24 years. My child just left home this weekend to attend Purdue. The wife and I have been discussing a job change for me since the first layoff. We wanted to get the child off to school first. I applied with Roehl last week and was turned down because I don't meet their qualifications.Now for the rest of the story. Convicted of misdemeanor possesion of marijuana in 1991 in California. Convicted of OMVI in 2000 in Ohio. No moving violations or trouble of any kind since the 2000 OMVI. I would also like to point out that I can pass any drug test that does not go back more than 18 years and I have not used alcohol for over 10. Now the question: Am I hireable in this industry? And if so , With whom? Any and all feedback will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    You can get a job.

    But your "pool of jobs" is going to look like a child's wader, instead of a lake. Background and history have become increasingly important during this period of downturn. Yes, it still sucks.

    Many companies won't even let you get to the explanations, or subsequent "excellent" job and personal lifestyle you've lived once you produce a background that has a couple of negatives.

    Companies are digging deeper than ever to uncover bad spots in your background. Some going as far back as 15 years on accidents. I discovered this, this past week while trying to get a friend on with my current employer.

    Which really sucks for me. Until we find a replacement driver, I have to drive 2 1/2 hours to pick up my truck. :(

    You can get a job but some have no DUI in lifetime policies and I think Roehl is one of them. Keep looking

    The DUI - no matter how old will hurt your chances of landing with a decent company,
    but a smaller company (and one that doesn't go into Canada) might be an option.
    The other issues you had in your past are troublesome. There are so many candidates out there
    that the carriers can be really picky... It seems many people that loose their job think trucking is
    the answer to their problems.

    Out of every 100 people that start trucking each year, 97 of them leave by
    the first year....And they leave in more debt than they started with.

    Or, if all else fails - maybe Home Depot with your background?

    PS. Be leary of any CDL School that PROMISES you a job when you graduate......

    I'm only a wanna-be so this may not be of much help.

    However, I've been roaming this site for quite a while and from what I've learned, an option for you might be to apply at as many outfits as you can (both large and small). Be brutally honest when filling out the applications and include everything.

    Once you do that, see how many send you a pre-hire.

    The pre-hire is practically worthless, but it shows that, on paper, you are hirable.

    My understanding is they can go back on drunk driving and criminal convictions ie misdemeanors for life.

    Yes. This is true - to an extent.

    Roehl runs into Canada. They can't accept an applicant that has 2 DUIs no matter how old, since Canada does not consider that.

    Canada considers 10+yrs on ONE DUI - rehabilitated but 2 DUIs and no CMV operation, ever.

    Many go back 7 or 10 on DUI's.

    Keep trying caframr, you'll find a company.

    Fremont? That sounds familiar. Is that up on US20?
