Kinda adding to what Injun said, the people you work under can also play a factor in determining that. If you have a dispatcher who isn't worth a ####, it won't turn out very good for you. If you have one who is, you can do just fine. Same way it is with any company.
And I just realized this is my 666th post, so, with that being said, let us take a moment to pay homage to the number of the beast

This all sounds pretty discouraging but I STILL wanna drive a truck! Does that mean I'm crazy?
-
No.,but the only way to REALLY know what is goin on is to do it,hell, give it a shot..
If NOTHING else,it will be an experience to talk about for life;if it does work out,you can work for as long as you want to;wherever you want to..
I was going to end this with,"nothing ventured, nothing gained"but that is kinda corny,so I wont.
Injun Thanks this. -
Turbo.........AWESOME post, best I've ever seen refering to the SCUMBAG company SWIFT TRANSPORTATION CO..........sure wish I'd read this info before I waisted 4-days of my life at orientation in February........the good part I guess is that I didn't go with them......
I find it unexplainable how some people can defend them........I guess they've drank the Kool-Aid one too many times.

i like how you say scumbag company. its like your spealing from experience or something. I drive for swift and have had both good and bad experiences. when a compan as large as swift is around of course they are going to get bad emploees. since i work for them i see them more than anyone els on the road. at a terminal i say a guy pull out of a bobtail spot and hit the truck next to him. that was verry stupid all he had to do was pull straight out he dident even have to back! that being said i have seen a lot more stupid things from other trucking companies. i saw WERNER take out a fuel island at a TA. SCHNIDER jackknifed a trl when there was enough room to u turn 3 thucks at the sametime and a lot of stupid things like that. but you dont hear even half the bad things about these compaies. the only reason i can think of it that these companies are half the size of swift. -
crazy cool... driving truck if fun
-
swift wont hire me cause i have a misdemeanor thats 8 1/2 year sold.. lol
-
Swift won't hire me because I pissed Jerry off lol. -
If you're the driver that always points out the bad in something, then I suppose you drive for a poorly run company that treats you unfairly.
There are drivers out there that make very comfortable livings not whining about their jobs. The money is out there. Do your homework. When you first start out, you make very little. Training drivers in company trucks saves you money headaches during service and banks you incredible paychecks. Once you've been with a large trucking firm, if you drive safely, you can become a mentor and teach the new kids coming up how to treat other drivers with respect and do it right.
Training isn't for everybody. Put in your time, buy a house for cash, buy your own little day cab and putt around locally with a drop and hook set up til you're ready to ride off into retirement sunset.
I was lucky enough to be in the trucking industry long enough to submit a patent application for refrigerated trailers that saves fuel. My earnings from training is funding this project. What do you want from life? A handout or a hand up? Both options are out there.
Of all the trucking companies I have researched so far, Swift seems to have the best traffic fleet lines with about the highest drop & hook rate in the U.S.
All you veteran and seasoned drivers out there remember when you were first starting out. I think all tractors should have service hash marks so other drivers know how long that driver in the next lane has been driving? Oops, better not let anybody beat me to the punch there.
I recommend Swift for a lot of reasons. I am not an employee or recruiter for Swift. Just educated enough to see earnings potential that could easily retire a young driver in 20 years. If you're married and buried in debt, have no children, you are the lucky ones.
Good Luck Drivers-
