Well there are some things that could help people in answering your question:
What are the gauges saying when it happens? Anything dropping to zero or pegging?
You can also go through the engine bay and start checking connections, maybe you just have a lose one on a sensor. Because you mentioned rain see if water is down in a connector.
The behavior you're describing now is pretty much exactly what the engine protection features of most electronic engines do these days so I'm going to assume the engine protection feature is kicking in which could be any number of items such as oil pressure, temperature, etc. So you could actually have low oil or coolant, or just a bad sensor. If its a 2007 emissions level engine maybe the DPF is clogged?
The easiest thing to do is get it into a shop and have them plug in. -
the truck is 1997 freightliner with a cummins mll..
the gauges never move thay stay just like they should I thought maybe a bad conn. from batt. turn everything on ac/lights/fans/heat mirr everything no drop in volt. the thing is it just does it from time to time not steedy it'' drop down and run for 2/3min then just come back on...its not the sut down light its the stop eng light...oil press. is fine its full and temp has nothing to do with it cause it does it even when I just start it up thanks for your reply..... -
Ok, your going to have to get the fault codes out of it, no if and or buts about it. If not you are just going to chase your tail and waste a lot of time.

Check your coolant level and sensor.

This if for the current version 4. You may have an older version, but this should help. -
hey guys I have leaned something new today about my truck it has a switch on it that has eng.check..now I switched it on and I got the codes for the truck it came out as code 343 and code 321 does that mean I need a new ecm???? or can some on
e tell me what I need to do...thanks
-
343 is an internal error in the ECM. The fault processor monitors the output of the injectors and communicates any faults to the main ECM processor. This code can be caused by electrical noise outside the engine. A faulty alternator, bad, or intermittent grounds, water intrusion into the ECM, water in connectors, loose connectors can cause this code.
321 ECM has detected voltage returning from injector #4 when the ECM isn't powering #4. This is usually a short in the injector harness either outside the engine or under the rocker cover. ECM will derate the engine and limit RPM to 1400. Basically inspect for wires rubbed through. -
How or where can I find a list of fault codes. I have a 99 Freightliner with a Cummins N14. Road Relay reads. 2R5004, 1LS001, 2S015. Thanks
