I might be buying my 1st truck (used of course) in the next few months.

I live in Pennsylvania close to the New York and New Jersey borders.
There's TONS of used trucks, all in my price range, within a few hundred miles from my house.

My question is, how "sweet" would a deal have to be in order for me to justify flying out to another state and driving the truck back?

The way I see it, being that most trucks get 5mpg, and fuel costs around $5.00/gal, is should cost me about $1.00 per mile to get the truck home.

*Buying a truck 1,000 miles away, should cost me (about) $1,000.00 to get it home.*

Are interest rates different (lower?) in the western states??
Are western state trucks usually in better shape?

    Thanks!:biggrin_25514:

If you're looking for a first truck, and looking at trucks that only get 5 mpg, you're setting yourself up to fail. I've had BIG trucks in the past that run three digits and also got fuel mileage in the threes. But, that was then and this is now. And now it's all about fuel mileage.

To answer your question, though - the cost of getting one home is minimal in the big picture.

Okay, what used trucks/engines (at what HP rating) get better than 5mpg?
I know most trucks get better than 5mpg. I just used that # to keep things simple.

If I were just starting out, I'd be looking at a S60 in something as pointy-nosed and plastic as you can stand to drive.

To be honest, that's exactly what I'm looking for. But I didn't want to get into a (truck brand debate) with anyone.

    But the question still stands.

How sweet should the deal be to justify having to fly out to another state and drive the truck home?

Buying a used truck is always a gamble so dont look at the cost of getting it home. Even thought it may be better to search local where you can easily examine the equipment sometime a sweeter deal may be 1000,s of miles away. Research and make a lot of phone calls talk to dealers and see what they have to offer

I'm planning on going 1900 miles, get a Detroit cheapest to maintain from what I've researched, but I'm far from an expert.

If you're going to bobtail, you'll have no problem getting 9 to 10 mpg. If you find the right truck at the right price, the cost of going to get it should be negligible. I will say though that the last 2 trucks I've bought at a great price came from your area. NJ and TN actually.
