So I chatted with Jennifer at May Trucking's Pensacola terminal. That was the most professional and honest chat I ever had with a recruiter. There actually are really good people out there.
Basically she said that due to my years away, I would have to start all over again. With that the only solution, I am planning on attending Washington-Holmes Technical Center in Chipley, FL this October. The program is 2 months (320hrs), so I wont be driving again until at least early January.![]()
But I will be driving again. I just hope I can get funds from the WIA program, otherwise....
So if any of you have been through this program recently, let me know about it. For those wondering it is around 2500 bucks for the course. But I have to add 500 bucks more for the gas bill driving 100 miles round trip on weekdays.![]()
Well I have to start over...kinda...

Did you give your CDL up? How long did you drive for and how long have you been away?
-
No I still have the Class A, it has just been 7 years since I last drove for pay. That was also on the old HOS.
-
That's crazy, I just called them and no one answered, student services close at 3. Then I refreshed this forum and seen this.
I was thinking of going, not sure if i'm willing to wait til October though.
Keeping tabs on this thread -
I am in the same situation, I think you should reconsider dude. There is no reason you should need to pay for an entire school, thats crazy. At worst you may need a refresher, not an entire school.
Look around, you are making a mistake. -
Problem is the "refresher" course end up being more expensive than the whole school. TDI in Milton, FL charges 700 bucks a day (10hrs) and everyone wants at least 60hrs refresher. That works out to 4200 bucks!!!
Frack that!!! -
I agree! Though May is probably a decent company there is no reason you need to go through all that. Find a company that will pay for your refresher. Plus two months of driving school under the WIA program in the long run will end up costing you more money due to the length of the program and time not working. Keep doing some research and find something that can get you to work immediately. Besides January is the absolute worst month to get into driving. Freight is at its slowest and weather at its worst. You will pay hell waiting for a trainer too because that's when everyone takes their time off.

I don't think you need to pay for a whole school, either...just the refresher. My DH has been out of driving for 4 years and no-one would take him. Trust me...he applied EVERYWHERE to no avail. He finished a 40 hour refresher 1 1/2 weeks ago and started today with a company. And he turned down 5 other job offers. It's the insurance that is causing this. And he feels way better about driving after the refresher.

Problem is May and Werner are the only two companies hiring where I live. Werner wont pay jack poopiedo, so I am very limited in options. Knight is only hiring teams, and I hate teaming. Just cant get much sleep.
Panama City Beach just sucks for trucking... -
I have the same problem, except i was stupid and gave up my CDL last year and Haven't drove in 4 years. No one will hire me and no refresher will do it. I will be starting over with Prime....
