    America's most dangerous jobs

[IMG]Truckers and deliverymen face road hazards every day.

Fatality rate per 100,000 workers: 22
    Median wage: $35,500

More truckers and delivery men, die on the job than any other vocation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Last year, there were 683 fatalities among this group.

More than 3 million people drive trucks for a living, whether it's delivering packages for UPS or driving long hauls across country.

The biggest safety challenge for the industry is that employers are cutting back on safety, according to Anthony Prince, an attorney with Teamsters Local 705 in Chicago. Sometimes, the equipment is not as well maintained as it should be; other times, drivers are pushed too hard.

"We've had instances where drivers are sent out in vehicles that are not roadworthy," he said. "In one case, a supervisor riding with a driver kept telling him to drive faster even though the driver didn't think it was safe."

With the promise of "same-day" and "overnight" deliveries, drivers are also under great time pressure and can work long hours, making fatigue a big factor in many accidents.

"We don't think people should die to get a package delivered," said Prince.

No driver is required to drive an unsafe vehicle. It is his duty to pull the plug. and before anyone invokes the, "but I'll lose my job" line...remember, no job is worth your life. Especially driving a truck!
There are lots of other driving jobs out there.
Good companies won't require you to drive an unsafe truck.

    #### right. Same goes for not feeling well or being too tired.

You just don't drive unsafe. Its not worth the risk to the public or yourself.

Lots of these driver deaths are during non-driving periods like tarping loads, ect.

    Phriend Thanks this.

    683 out of 3,000,000.

I can live with those odds.

And a quick search revealed that the fishing industry was the most dangerous 'occupation', with truck driver being #9 on that list.

But then, the next list of 'positions' with the highest fatality rate showed Motor Vehicle Operators to be #1.

In the following list showing the most fatal industries, Transportation and Warehousing was at #2.

And that was all lumped together on one page!

Yes, we truck drivers have a dangerous job. It is worse than most, but not as bad as others.

But this is one point that should be remembered...

Most of our fatalities are caused by our own misjudgement and stupidity.
