Ticket in another state long ago, will it affect me obtaining a CDL?

    Hello Forum,

I've been mulling over the decision to get into the trucking biz for some time now, and it's looking more and more like I'm about to take the plunge.... but then recently, I just realized that 9 1/2 years ago, I was ticketed for reckless driving in Virginia. 91 in a 55, don't know what I was thinking, I never even go above the speed limit anymore and i'm the most defensive driver you'll meet, to the point where whoever is with me will poke fun at me.... not that any of this matters to you all.

I lived in and still live in NY ('Cuse) at the time. I did receive some things in the mail for about a year after and then I just stopped receiving anything on it. Well, years go by and you know, these things slip your mind, especially when you're in your early 20's and partying is your number 1 priority. Fast forward to now, almost 10 years later, I'm considering becoming a Trucker and of course, this.... I should have KNOWN this would come to bite me in the ace... Never in my wildest dreams would i have thought i'd be considering a trucking career at that point in my life.

So I'm just wondering if anyone else has dealt with a similar situation as this, or would know how this affect me going for my CDL. I don't even remember the county it happened in. I guess they really frown on speeding there, anything over 80 in a 55 is automatically consider reckless I believe. My driving record in NY is mostly flawless, only tickets really i've ever had were for dumb stuff like headlights, seatbelts, inspection and the like.

I'm a little worried about it, because I kinda have it in my mind that this is what I wanna do. I think I would be cut out for it, I have no wife, kids, gf, no house, no major bills. I am kind of a loner, but like meeting new people..., love driving.. mostly delivered pies because i like that you're in your vehicle not being bothered by anyone and can just listen to music and chill. I like exploring new territory, i'm the kinda guy who just gets in his car and drives to a new town and hits up the local bar just for the hell of it. So yeah, any insight as to how this would affect me would be greatly appreciated!

It's easy to run your MVR, head to the local license office and request it. If it is not on this, you may need to contact the offending state and request one. The internet site for that state should have the info you need to know.

After that, just be honest when you talk to the company reps. Let the chips fall and see you land. Good Luck!

Nothing has come up in New York ever about it, I have heard stories of people just not paying tickets and eventually they go away... but then i've also heard that that doesn't fly anymore the way it used to, or certain states kind of have some sort of collaboration with each other.

I guess I should look at the Virgina DMV site and see what I can come up with. I'm still sort of in awe over this, it completely went out of my mind after a few years and never thought about it except the rare occasional passing moment, but like I said, becoming a truck driver wasn't something I thought about ever until the last year so of course now it could present itself as a problem.

Well see this is what I'm afraid of, from what I understand you can serve some serious jail time for this and well, made it this far without being in the slammer and don't plan on it at this point. I guess I will call the states DMV and see what they have on record tomorrow

I can not find a free Driver License check for Virginia. In case anyone needs it, here is the free check for Florida (will only tell you if your drivers license is good or not in the state of Florida):
