I have an '07 379 with an ISX 475, 13 speed. 3 to 4 weeks ago started getting black smoke when in 13th and trying to accellerate @ 1300-1400 rpm. If I downshift to 12th smoke goes away and manifold pressure comes back up. Has been getting progressively worse. Now smoking in top 3 gears below 1500. Manifold pressure at 20-25 until I downshift and rpms come back up to 1500 or above. Then manifold pressure jumps back up to 38psi . Replaced EGR 1 week ago. No improvement. Still loss of power and black smoke below 1500 rpm.
Talked to Cummins, Peterbilt, etc and no answers yet. Has anyone been able to fix this problem?

Aside of EGR-Valve itself there is one more element that is going bad almost as often - exhaust pressure sensor, there was bad batch of them and Cummins changed supplier at some point (or so I have heard). Your boost is too low, you killing the engine driving like that also producing a lot of soot that goes back into cylinders doing damage everywhere. If you need pictures where it is located and how to get it done let me know - I think I can find them from the time mine went bad

it could be several things. just about every sensor dealing with air temp, pressure, etc could cause these symptoms. the vanes in the turbo could be sticking. its really hard to say, your best bet is to get it hooked up to a computer and monitor sensor inputs.

Hey produce, could I get those pics? Can you test the sensor to see if it is bad? I have an '05 isx and can not get more than 25 psi 98% of the time, and when does get above that it seems it is earlier in the morn. Cummins replaced the turbo, egr, and the box that controls the dump valve, no fixie :-/ -
Yes I can get to them not immediately though, sensors can be tested but in this case you can't test the thin pipe leading to it. Then even if it pass and pipe is clean - they can still be bad, so the only way to deal with it is to buy new one and get the old one out when checking the pipe. Mine was reading higher pressure then it really was - causing the turbo to run open wider (that means lower boost and higher EGT at times)

My truck has this same issue. Could you fix it?
