I am a new driver and have the opportunity to buy a new truck. My question is will my job opportunities increase with having this new truck and going the route of independent contractor or should I wait on buying a truck and just go drive a companies equipment until I have more experience?

IMHO I would wait and get that feel for the job first. Give yourself some time and research the pros and cons. Look some more on here and you will find some threads on buying trucks. Good luck.....

I should have added what route would get me to doing local work faster?? Having my own truck or a company truck?
-
I guess if you wanted to run your own authority and your own accounts, it shouldn't matter as long as if you'll be able to get the insurance.
But if you want to lease your truck to a local company, you'll need experience AFAIK. -
I sure wouldn't want to own a new truck and try to figure out how to make payments working local.
But then I'm not real interested in local work. Too much back-breaking manual labor in the biggest percentage of local jobs. -
If you have little or even no experience?, I think you should wait, like posted before, I've seen people get into the industry, just to find they hate it, try it on for a while and see if it fit you, or srhrinks to fast and you what out, buy a truck know, and try and sell?, hope you think it threw

I guess it would depend a lot on where you are. I can't imagine how I would make new truck payments working local in my area. But I don't live in a large city either. -
I say go for it! You only live once right?
I was just reading the thread about the Swift driver who was broke down for two weeks. Could you imagine having to pay for that truck for two weeks and for the breakdown and the tow! Not to mention it still wasn't fixed and had to be moved to OH from WV!
If that driver were in O.O he would probably be at least $7000 in the hole right now!
NO YOU SHOULDN'T BUY A TRUCK RIGHT NOW!
Make your mistakes on someone else's dime! Until you have a proven track record written down in detail as to what you made and what your expenses would have been plus how your DM is treating you then you shouldn't do it. Now spend the next two years doing this along with taking some business courses and learning the ins and outs of freight and then decide if its worth it. Sometimes you will find you will make more as a company driver. I also recommend start saving money now. You are going to want at least $20,000 in the bank before you dive into owning your own business. That's what it is! Owning your own business!
