I understand that you have to have a CDL permit before you can get in the cab and actually learn to drive, but from all the info I've read it says that you must meet all qualifications and pass all tests as those required from someone getting the actual CDL.
Does that mean you have to do the skills test to get the permit or just pass the knowledge test only? Doesn't make sense to have to pass the skills part for the permit if the tests for the permit and the actual CDL are the same.
Could someone please provide some clarification?
Thanks.

Just haft to pass the written part first.

You just have to pass the general knowledge/air brakes/ and combination test to get a permit no driving involved till so try the skills test for the real thing.

Thanks guys, that's good to know, I'll start studying

With a permit, will I still need a CDL person in the cab with me in order to drive the vehicle?
-
After permit, will that allow me to drive alone or will I need someone in the cab with a CDL to go along?

Yes. You must be supervised by somebody who has a Class A CDL.

With a permit and a CDL holder in the passenger seat (usually a school instructor but could be anybody willing to let you drive their truck), you can drive a Class A vehicle requiring any endorsement, *except* hazmat. Under no circumstances can you operate a truck hauling hazmat unless you have a real CDL with that endorsement.

Going for CDL B and buying class 7 or 8 straight truck. I know no one with a CDL, looks like School is back in play.
