    What's the story here?

Last year, early July, new compressor and high pressure line.

    This year, early July, thermistor
it worked for six days then a high pressure line
it worked for three days and a new compressor.

That was two weeks ago. A/C just quit again. :biggrin_25510:

I can smell oil again, too, so I suspect it's another compressor.

    What gives?

We are seeing a number of issues. The main problem right now is a bad rash of compressors. The reed valves inside the compressor are failing, sometimes imediately, causing the freon to cycle only inside the valve mechanism of the compressor itself. The gas just gets hotter and hotter and fries the high pressure line and it blows. The thermistors are just too cheap and do not last. The electrical connector is very cheap and the pins are very small and corrode easy. Internally there are two different types. The old type had the temp probe exposed inside the a/c line and the new one is sealed. The temp probe in the new ones are too delicate and are still failing. There are also software updates so that the cab a/c system is working when the bunk system is on and vise versa. This is supposed to help. The A/C problems are very well known to Int'l and they are still working on it. Even if your truck is out of warranty, ask your dealer for policy, or customer good will if you have a thermistor or compressor failure! When we have a compressor failure, especially when the high pressure line blows, we are changing both expansion valves, filter, compressor, and a complete flush of the system.

Well. It didn't work worth a dang last night. Shut everything down once I got parked, like I usually do. Tried it this morning just for kicks and giggles.

And now it works just fine!

No worries on that system flush. It's done that itself three times in the past month.

Got some advice regarding a filter specific to the A/C. The advisor tried to describe where to look for it, but lost me at "under the hood by the firewall." He says it is a separate filter from the cab air. Where, specifically, would I look for this?

P.S.: Truck is 2011 with 230K miles. Should still be warranted.

Changing the filters will improve performance, they do get plugged up quick. The one on the firewall gets dirty more often than the bunk one. The filters are not covered under warranty, but there are instructions and pictures on how to change them in your owners manual.

Thank you for all the great information.

Yah, they are the same for the bunk and firewall, white, pleated, about 1 inch thick, about as big as piece of paper. As for the intermittent operation, sounds like there is still a bug in the wiring, probably at the thermistor terminals.

Okay, update. A/C compressor went out while sitting on the tarmac in front of International Las Vegas. Immediately after getting a brand new wiring harness installed, the DPF cleaned and computer updates done.

This will be the fourth time the A/C has gone out in barely over a month. Perhaps it might be time for International to fire the guy who designed this system and go to whatever it is Freightliner uses for theirs. I had a lot of problems with that Cascadia. But air conditioning was never one of them.
