I was surprised at how easy it was to pass. All the basics-vital signs, listen to chest, lungs, abdomen, height/weight. But then the MD "checked" my strength by pushing and pulling on my arms and legs while I held still with only 5 pounds of force AT MOST. Sheesh, our arms and legs weigh more than that.

Strange thing was, on the form she marked "no" under hernia, but she didn't do the turn and cough routine OR ask about it, just marked.

Kinda strange, but I passed so.....

Just thought there'd be more "physical" aspects to a DOT physical than just passive assessment.

Sounds like you were looking forward to that and she evidently was not :biggrin_2551:

Went for my DOT Physical today. Got a 1 year certification.

I have a condition known as Tachycardia (fast heart beat) caused by an extra electrical path way in my heart. Millions have it but most do not know it. Mine is controlled with medication.

I took my meds with me for them to see and explained what they were for. Then they said, "we have to get the bible and check on this". It was the DOT handbook. Anyway, providing my doctor sends them something saying I can drive a commercial vehicle, I'm good to go.

The rest of the physical was a breeze; BP 117 over 70, pulse 68 eyes 20/20, coordination was great.

I did tell them that I had a color deficiency. They said, "Are you color blind"? I said "no, I know that the top light on the traffic control device means go and the bottom light means stop". They looked and said, "Are you serious". They weren’t in a joking mood I guess. Anyway, I have trouble with dark blues and black and they said it was not an issue.

I was disappointed with the 1 year certification but I was told that there are those that have to have a physical every 3 months because of certain conditions.

So, I start school on Monday. I will keep those who are interested updated on my progress. Wish me luck.

May 1st 2006, I had a heart attack caused by a total occlusion of my LAD artery. May 2nd I was given a angioplasty procedure and 2 stents to open the artery. After losing 60 pounds and having to take BP meds, I have a 2 year card. I drive for myself. 57 years old.
