Doesn't surprise me. Have a local department in my part of the world that actually blocks the right lane of a road/highway with 2 lanes of traffic in each direction & does the inspection right there.

Another local department closes the u-turn under a major highway at an intersection with another 4 lane road to do their inspections in the u-turn.

Do the safety inspection in an unsafe location, doesn't make sense but pretty sure it makes some revenue for them.

The Commerce City, CO police dept will block two lanes of a 3-lane wide road (Quebec St - 3 lanes each way) north of the TA... and set up their portable scales.

Yup... we're talking municipal revenue enhancement. :biggrin_25510:

Some of these officers have no sense of personal safety.

I saw one doing the same thing on a narrow shoulder laying on a creeper under the truck with
about half or more of his body out in the driving lane.

I had one whip out his portable scales and weigh me right in front of a stoplight. I was in a tandem dump and I asked him "don't you want to move to the shoulder for this?" he said we not moving anywhere until I know you're not overweight. I wasn't. But if I was did he mean to make me dump part of my load right in the street? I think he would have.

I've blocked the road to use portable scales before. That being said, my guess is he weighed you there because it was flat and level. I use the shoulder mostly but some roads the shoulders are not in good shape. There are back roads when I stop a truck I will take a majority of the lane to keep the truck on the pavement. In my State, if there is a police officer or emergency vehicle stopped on the shoulder or roadway, you must slow/ stop and pass at a safe speed. Unfortunately some of the roads we work do not have shoulders. Some of these shoulders are high frequency roads for truck use. Some of these roads are bypass routes for a scale facility. But when you do this, you must do it in a straight away to give other motorist a clear view of your vehicle.

I got stop in Arizona and they had it set up where you drove down a side street to them and they were in an empty parking lot. Kind of nice not having traffic whizzing by you.

Had another one today. Stopped a guy for speeding 19 over in a big truck. Greet the fellow and ask for his license, and I just get a blank stare. Turns out he doesn't have a CDL, he never has had one. His regular license is suspended/revoked for 3 DUI's. The guy sitting in the passenger seat is the owner/operator, but he got tired and stuck this guy in the seat. His log showed he had driven for almost 20 hours and he stated he needed a break. He actually logged that as well. They said they had switched about an hour before I stopped them. To top it off the truck was out of service, the trailer was out of service and the two fellas in the truck couldn't drive either. :biggrin_2554:
