Well regardless, both big trucks & 4 wheeler drivers don't ever slow down when someone is on shoulder.
Drivers have no respect nor any competent driving skills anymore.
Remember, a drivers license says you can "legally" drive a motor vehicle, doesn't say you can competently drive one.
Slow down or move over if you can

Wow, very sad indeed but Im surprised it doesnt happen more often. Usually more 4-wheelers than trucks but there's still too many people that dont move over except if its a cop with a customer. Granted, if theres traffic passing you, theres not a whole lot you can do but atleast be paying attention to see far enough ahead that someone is on the shoulder so you can have time to move to the far left side of the granny-lane and slow down.
Maybe these states need to have a more, uniform sign that instructs people to move over or slow down for anyone on the shoulder with their emergency flashers on, not just cops, maintenence and emergency vehicles because you know how some people are, if yer sittin on the side of the road in yer big truck, yer not exactly a cop, emergency or maintenence vehicle so they dont feel they need to move over or even slow down.
Ive been on the side of the interstate once with a blown steer tire on the driver side on a busy day in Nebraska on 80 and it wasnt fun. Its amazing how much traffic didnt move over, even when they didnt have anyone on the other side of them in the hammer lane. I felt sorry for the tire guy that had to change that tire.
A family member of ours was killed out in Texas about 7 years ago or so because of some idiot not moving over. Maybe he shouldnt of stopped on the shoulder but he did anyways because his wipers quit working in heavy rain and couldnt see so he pulled over. As he was standing on the front of the truck messin' with the wipers, his truck was struck in the rear by another semi and he was knocked off and ran over by his own truck. Whether or not he had his triangles out our 4-ways on, I dont know. I dont know all the details. But irregardless, Ive seen plenty of people not move over when someone has put their triangles out and had their flashers on. -
Thanks for the post! We all need to wake-up, move over and/or slow down when approaching roadside obsticles, emergencies and stalled vehicles. Most truckers do, some don't. This is a good example of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This road I-80 will go down in history as the "Deadliest Road in America".
Last year, I saw a record number of collisions involving big trucks and 4 wheelers, speeding during Blizzard Type conditions. Amazing! People will drive unsafe in poor visibility, risking not only their own lives but the lives of others.
over 30,000 human lives will be lost this year on America's Roads......What a disappointment.
The Truth! Sometimes it hurts, Sometimes it heals.25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
We have had the signs as long as anyone. Move over or slow down.
The time of day might have been a factor, it was getting to be near sunset. I have no idea why these things happen, sometimes they just happen, and the insurance companies and law enforcement try to figure out why. Sometimes they seem to and other times, not so much.
4 men are now past their earthly troubles, but those left behind will be dealing with this.
My condolences to those they left behind. -
My prayers go out to the family and friends of those involved.
This is and has been a problem for a long time. Sometimes pedestrians, (those that are stopped and get out of their cars) don't pay attention and step across that white line, and with a vehicle traveling in the outside line, it's just a foot or two that separates them from living or death. Kinda scary when you have cars and trucks blowing by you only a few feet away.
Kansas has had the move over or slow down law for a few years now. It applies to law enforcement and highway workers. There are numerous big signs warning of of this. I have noticed that since this law went into affect, drivers are also moving over for any car/truck stopped along the shoulder.
Most all accidents are preventable, it just takes giving driving your undivided attention. About the only accident that is totally unpreventable in a motor-vehicle, is the one where a Boeing 747 misses the runway and lands on your car. -
Not playing monday morning qb. Either way the driver ,could of S L O W E D DOWN,if he wasn't able to get over..
Each day i see more and more 'so called' Professional Drivers, not moving over of slowing down for cars, trucks on the shoulder, when they are able to do just that.
I evan get over to the other lane when there is a someone walking on the shoulder,,, ya never know when they might jump out in front of you. -
Wow. Just more reason why I have to constantly look over my shoulder.
I dont care if you're tired, stupid, or a new driver, if there are 2 seperate tow trucks on the side of the road with their beacons on, there is no excuse to not move over.drvrtech77 Thanks this.
