I understand the importance of getting the customer's freight where it needs to go on time. I get that.

What the OTHER side of the fence (Dispatch and Load Planners) DOESN'T seem to get is that what needs to be EQUALLY IMPORTANT is getting the people who are MOVING your customer's freight where THEY need to go on-time.

Why does it always seem like my hometime is the last freakin' priority every #### time?

If you want reasonably consistent hometime, look at a company with some type of a home-time fleet. Slip seating is the downside, but the upside is that someone is waiting for that truck so they need to get you back as close to on time as possible.

I did that for over two years till I went o/o. Now I tell dispatch I want to be home a day before I really want to get home. Doing that I usually get home when I want.

Forget about consistent hometime with a large megafleet.

Reason #2 (closely tied to the other reason I gave).......you going home generates NO revenue for the dispatcher OR the company.

Me and my co-driver have been considering becoming an owner-operator team for some time now.

Would that solve our problems? The route and fuel are up to us, and if we want to go home, we can say "screw you" to the dispatcher and GO HOME.

But I know there are some downsides to o/o, and I'd like to know what a lot of them are before the two of us make a big decision like that.

if your company isn't getting your home going O/O and telling them to screw off will get you home, but it will establish a reputation as being a difficult driver. Doesn't seem like a good business plan to me. Work out your home time issues before you make a move to become an O/O (or more like an L/P)
