d12D, really, this engine lets you have good MPG, but engine is more complicated, with dual EGR, twin coil injectors and European parts are more expencive.
But if it is not Version-2 (before '03) this is D12C engine - it is more simple and more reliable, but as I can see on VN and FH12 trucktors made from '98 to 2002 engines are not in good condition, all over million miles on clock, and more a half needs new injectors, fuel delivery pumps and some expencive stuff -
thx Pablo-2006 in a 670-leasing it from a co that has maint deal w a ltl carrier that ONLY has volvos w volvo pwr and can get it serviced somewhere other than dealer so I felt safer-btw the techs ALL say better engine, less breakdown but more $ for repairs. will be pulling containers, some overweight, mostly flat rds, and 586k mi. no apparent leaks, noises(really quiet eng!) smooth volvo ride and all that.

I would just say that you should replace the fan clutch assembly and have all belt tensioners on the front of the motor looked at and replaced.
It is 700 dollars with core charge and not very expensive for belts and tensioners. Not changing these out has cost me thousands of dollars this year. Other than that the engine is solid.
Pulling hills it is ok. It runs with the pack; nothing outstanding. I believe the advantage is that the engine has a great cooling system.
