Try this one on for size. 1997 Pete 379 N14 Cummins. When my cruise control works, My Jakes don't. When my Jakes work my cruise control doesn't. Can the ECM be programmed to where the Jakes will not activate until the brake pedal is depressed? If this is the case, I probably have a bad brake switch. Just bought this truck.

I assume you are wanting it to kick in when your speed gets about 3 mph above the setting of your cruise.

Don't know if it is Pete issue or not. I've driven 4 different Volvo's with Cummins. None of them would engage the Jake if your were in cruise. I don't think it is a programming issue, but something set up by Cummins.

You don't have to hit the brake. Just tap the clutch pedal to disengage the cruise, and the Jake will kick in if it is turned on.

    Hope this helps.

There are settings in the engine computer to controll this.
The idea is that when it's icy, you should never use cruise and have your jake turned on. In case you crest an ice coverd hill and your jake kicks on, locks up your drives, and you loose control.
The truck dealership can change this for you.
They can set it so it comes on in different stages at what ever speed you want it to, over what you have set the cruise to.
I have mine set to 1 km over stage one, 2 km over stage two, 3 km over i get full jake.

Turns out air switch on the brake block under the dash was hanging. My truck is configured to when you tap the brake pedal the jakes engage as well as obviously thecruise disengages. Since this switch was hung the ECM thought the brake pedal was depressed which in turn made the jakes work any time the acellerator pedal was realewsed( the way every other truck I have ever owned worked) this also made the cruise inop. On the flip side of this, the jakes would not work when the switch was hung in the no brake position but the cruise would work! Really thought this would be some sort of pedal issue. Thanks for all the input!!
