Is it $1200 or $12000, if it`s for $1200 why not just buy it and part it out yourself and make a few bucks, or as you say just take your time and fix it up for what you want.

I would find out why they put it in the bone yard, someone may know the real reason. Old iron is old iron and shortening a frame is not that easy especially a double frame you have to strip it down completely from the cut back, not to get the two welds overlapping.
I would do plug swaps on the transmission and diffs to start then the engine, remove the oil pan plug and look for metal. If the engine has new oil and filter, that is a bad sign, if the filter is old then maybe buy a new one and cut the old one apart looking for metal. Check the crankshaft end play, also look at the clutch adjuster if it is at the bottom of the lock channel it is worn out.
Companies do not scrap old iron that has value, they keep it as a spare. -
He is on another forum that I look at too asking the same question, I`m pretty sure he has bought the truck and going to fix it up.
